The global movement of Korean films and Korean actors is alarming.

The film 'Parasite' swept big awards at film festivals around the world in 2020. After that, contrary to expectations that Korean films will be difficult to succeed abroad for some time, the movie ‘Minari’ reversed this.

On April 11, actor Youn Yuh-Jung won the Best Supporting Actress Award for the film ‘Minari’ at the 74th British Academy Film Awards. ‘Minari’ is a movie about a special journey of a Korean family who left for the unfamiliar United States in search of hope. What makes the award even more special is that it is the first Korean actor and the first Asian to be awarded. Once again, it was a moment when Korean films made a new history in world film history.

Shortly after the award, Youn Yuh-Jung appeared nervous, saying, "Hello, England, I am Korean actor Youn Yuh-Jung, I don't know what to say, I am very honored to be nominated.”

Since then, her honest and witty acceptance speech has attracted people's attention. She drew a lot of laughter and applause by saying, "It is especially meaningful and honorable in that the British, known as snobbish, recognized me as a good actress."

‘Minari’ was nominated for six awards, including Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Music, and Casting. Of course, except for the Best Supporting Actress award, ‘Minari’ failed to win the award, but just being nominated means a lot.

Earlier, Park Chan-Wook's ‘The Handmaiden’ won the Foreign Language Film Award, and Bong Joon-ho's ‘Parasite’ won the Foreign Language Film Award and the Original Screenplay Award.

The move has also led to speculation that ‘Minari’ is increasing its chances of publicity at the 93rd Academy Awards. This year, it was nominated in six categories, including Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

‘미나리’, 한국 영화의 위상을 또 한 번 드높이다

한국 영화, 한국 배우의 세계적인 행보가 심상치 않다.

영화 ‘기생충’이 작년 2020년 세계 각국의 영화제에서 큰 상을 휩쓸었다. 그 이후 한동안은 한국 영화의 해외에서의 성공은 어려울 것이라는 예상과는 달리, 영화 ‘미나리’가 이를 뒤집었다.

지난 4월 11일, 배우 윤여정이 제74회 영국 아카데미 시상식(British Academy Film Awards)에서 영화 '미나리'로 여우조연상을 받았다. '미나리'는 희망을 찾아 낯선 미국으로 떠나온 한국 가족의 특별한 여정을 담은 영화이다. 이 상이 더욱 특별한 것은 한국 배우 최초 수상이며 아시아인으로서도 처음이라는 것이다. 또 한 번 한국 영화가 세계 영화사에 새 역사를 쓰는 순간이었다.

이날 윤여정은 수상 직후 "안녕하세요 영국, 나는 한국 배우 윤여정이다, 뭐라고 말해야할지 모르겠다, 후보에 올라 매우 영광이다, 아니 이제 후보가 아니다"라고 말하며 긴장한 모습을 보였다.

이후 윤여정 배우 특유의 솔직하고 재치 있는 수상 소감이 사람들의 눈길을 끌었다. 윤여정은 “고상한 체한다(snobbish)고 알려진 영국인들이 좋은 배우로 인정했다는 점에서 특히 의미 있고 영광”이라고 말해 많은 웃음과 박수를 자아냈다.

'미나리'는 이번 시상식에서 감독상과 남우조연상, 여우조연상, 외국어영화상, 음악상, 캐스팅상까지 6개 부문에 후보로 올랐다. 물론 여우조연상을 제외하고는 아쉽게 수상에 실패했지만, 후보에 올랐다는 것만으로도 큰 의미를 있다.

앞서 박찬욱 감독의 '아가씨'가 외국어영화상을, 봉준호 감독의 '기생충'이 외국어영화상과 오리지널 각본상을 받았다.

또한 ‘미나리’의 이러한 행보는 제 93회 미국 아카데미 시상식에서의 선전 가능성을 더욱 높이고 있다는 관측을 이끌었다. 올해 오스카의 작품상, 감독상, 남우주연상, 여우조연상 등 총 6개 부문에 후보로 올랐다.
