COVID-19 VaccinationDifficulty with Studying Side Effects of Vaccination

After the rapid spread of the pandemic, many research teams focused on inventing a vaccine to stop the coronavirus. After many trials and errors, many countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom were able to make a vaccine. However, this is not the end of all our problems. Side effects must be considered when administering vaccines to a large population.

Typical side effects of the coronavirus may include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, or diarrhea. These symptoms signify that the vaccine is working and that the body is building protection. However, some people may experience more deadly side effects. For example, 25 individuals in European Nations reported that they experienced serious blood clots, eventually leading to 9 deaths. When the vaccine was further distributed, 31 additional patients experienced blood clot issues.

Although these instances may seem to prove that the vaccines can cause serious side effects, the evidence is rather lacking because correlation does not mean causation. Although it is true that the vaccine was administered to these people, there is no way to prove that the blood clots were caused directly by the vaccine. The only link between the two events is time. Scientists cannot neglect the possibility of the existence of an additional factor that caused the blood clots.

Also, the vaccine undergoes many clinical trials before it is approved to minister to the public. Although it is unlikely that severe side effects were overlooked, clinical trials are not designed to identify all types of rare events. Thus it does make sense that rare events would start to show after the vaccine is distributed to a large population. When further research was conducted, the COVID-19 vaccine was shown to elicit severe allergic reactions in 5 cases out of one million.

With inconclusive evidence, it is crucial that further research is done on the coronavirus. Detailed studies done on the rare side effects of the vaccine and possible causes of these side effects are vital for saving the lives of patients that are being administered the vaccines.
