To any fashion enthusiast, the first Monday in May means a lot more than just a regular spring day. It is only the biggest night in fashion, the party of the year, and the Superbowl of fashion: the Met Gala. What started as an intimate soiree to raise money for the Costume Institute, has grown into one of the most exclusive fundraisers in the world bringing together the biggest faces in fashion, film, society, music, and art.

This culturally rich event celebrates fashion as an art form while diving into significant societal ideas as their annual theme. However, it is crucial to recognize that the event is only successfully executed through the use of celebrities and their red carpet looks. Figuratively speaking, celebrities serve as walking exhibition pieces of the event itself, with Anna Wintour as the curator. As chairwoman of the Gala, Anna Wintour’s responsibility goes far beyond just seating arrangements. For example, Wintour has full control over the partnership between celebrities and their designers and brands.

This level of control directly correlates with Richard Dyer’s notion on how stars are commodities that are produced by institutions. A star is a constructed image represented across a range of media embodying certain ideologies to appeal to an audience. This is no different for the Met Gala- they are merely well-dressed chess pieces on a red checkered chess board.

Take 2019’s theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion” as an example. Met Gala’s most open-ended theme due to its complex nature in interpretation but, some of the key words that represent camp are exaggerated, kitschy, gaudy, and ironic. With all this flamboyancy, the underlying homage to the queer community is often overlooked. From having to rely on defying the norm and championing the unusual as the usual, camp embodies every essence of queerness which can be seen through the outfits. Ezra Miller came as a performance where he removed his gown and mask as he moved up the steps slowly revealing his new face. This represents the “coming out of the closet” metaphor that is commonly used in the LGBTQ community when they open up about their sexual identity. Harry Styles wore a gender-neutral jumpsuit with tulle bodice and a pussy bow paired with heels and a pearl earring. His outfit defied gender biases by having a male wear what is known more as feminine article of clothing. Lastly, Cara Delavigne presented a look covered from head to toe in colorful stripes which represents the rainbow flag that symbolizes the LGBTQ community.
