These days, there have been a large number of people infected or killed by the most problematic disease worldwide, COVID-19. As the pandemic crucially interferes with people’s life in general, the invention of vaccinations were outstanding discoveries that amazed and led a myriad of people to happiness. However, among numerous diseases, we must not forget cancer and the importance of the development of its treatment, which must be prioritized in the medical field.

Cancer is the leading cause of death globally. It has killed approximately 10 million people in 2020 even with the development of various medical and surgical processes over 250 years.
In 1775, Percival Pott, founder of orthopedic, identified the correlation between the development of cancer and environmental factors, Carcinoma. At this period, no treatment nor testing was applicable, so this discovery was extremely beneficial to the overall health of people. In the late 1800s, the radical Mastectomy surgery was first developed as breast cancer surgery and was performed until the mid 20th century. The scientists were able to identify the effect of the chromosomal damage on uncontrollable mitosis in humans’ somatic cells which leads to cancer cells and metastasis.

The 1950s was, I call, the period when the most significant discoveries were made in the field of oncology. Roy Hertz and Min Chiu Li were able to completely cure the human solid tumor by chemotherapy, utilizing the drug methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine. It is the method in which the aggressive form of drugs is injected into the human's body, eradicating the rapidly growing cells. While this method kills off the cancer cells as they uncontrollably proliferate, it can also influence other normal cells, destabilizing their ability to perform a proper cellular function. In addition, in the late 1900s, numerous types of tumor suppressor genes were discovered, including p53 genes that are known as guardian angels in preventing cancer. A lot of research is still needed with these tumor suppressor genes so that, one day, cancer can be treated effectively with minor side effects to most people.

요즘 전 세계적으로 가장 문제가 되는 질병인 COVID-19에 감염되고 사망하는 사람들이 굉장히 많다. 전염병이 일반인의 삶을 결정적으로 방해하는 만큼 예방 접종의 개발은 수많은 사람들을 놀라게 하고 행복으로 이끄는 놀라운 발견이었다. 그러나 수많은 질병 중에서도 우리는 의료 분야에서 최우선시 되어야 하는 암의 치료 발전의 중요성을 잊지 말아야 한다.

암은 전 세계적으로 주요한 사망 원인이다. 250년 동안 다양한 의학 및 수술 과정의 발전에도 불구하고 2020년 약 1000만 명의 사람들이 사망했다.

1775년 정형과의 창시자인 Percival Pott는 암 발생과 이의 환경 요인인 암종 사이의 상관 관계를 확인했다. 이 시기에는 치료나 테스트가 없었으므로 이 발견은 사람들의 전반적인 건강에 매우 유익했다. 1800년대 후반, 근치 유방 절제술이라는 수술이 유방암 치료제로 처음 개발되어 20세기 중반까지 사용되었고, 전이로 이어지는 인간 체세포의 제어 불가능한 유사 분열에 대한 염색체 손상이 암에게 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지 확인할 수 있었다.

1950년대는 종양학 분야에서 가장 중요한 발견이 이루어진 시기였다. Roy Hertz와 Min Chiu Li는 약물 메테트렉사이트와 6-머캅토퓨린을 이용하는 화학 요법으로 인간 고형 종양을 완전히 치료할 수 있었다. 이는 공격적인 형태의 약물을 인체에 주입하여 빠르게 성장하는 세포를 제거하는 방법이다. 이 방법은 제어할 수 없이 증식하는 암세포를 죽이지만 다른 정상적인 세포에도 영향을 주어 적절한 세포 기능을 수행하는 능력을 불안정하게 할 수도 있다. 또한 1900년대 후반에 암을 예방하는 수호 천사로 알려진 p53 유전자를 포함하여 수많은 유형의 종양 억제 유전자가 발견되었다. 이러한 종양 억제 유전자에 대한 많은 연구가 여전히 필요하며 언젠가 대부분의 사람들에게 암을 효과적으로 치료할 수 있는 방법을 모색해 나가야 한다.
