The origin of the conflict between Israel and Palestine can be found during World War I, which was about 100 years ago. In 1917, the British government presented the “Balfour Declaration”, showing its support for finding Jewish a national homeland in Palestine, where it was a small region of the Ottoman Empire with a minority of Jewish population. This declaration contradicted Britain’s prior promise during World War I to Arab states in the Middle East, saying they will grant autonomy for them once they win the war. As more Jews migrated to the region from the 1920s to 1940s, a conflict involving violence between Arabs and Jews was exacerbated. In 1947, the UN decided to split Palestine into Arab states and Jewish states. However, the decision was declined by Arabs, who were insisting on full dominance of the whole region.

As a consequence, Palestine and Israel had ongoing conflicts regarding territorial issues, Palestinian refugees, and the creation of Palestinian states. Despite the efforts of solving the problem via peace talks, which have been going on for more than 25 years, neither of them seemed to be willing to concede to one another. The most recent violent conflict occurred on May 10th, 2021. It was provoked by a protest in East Jerusalem by Palestinians over the predicted decision of the Supreme court of Israel to expel six Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah, a predominant Palestinian region in East Jerusalem. Violence including protests, riots, and airstrikes happened in both Israel and Gaza strip (self-governing Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean Sea) for 11 days until a ceasefire was announced on May 21st, 2021. Consequently, a wide range of numerous casualties resulted; Palestinian casualties were relatively a lot more than Israelite casualties.

The 2021 Israel- Palestine conflict shows a great example of concurrent history. History is essential to understand our current events because many issues nowadays regarding global connections originate from modern history from the 1900s. Countries can have continuous conflicts or can follow the historical pattern. Therefore, to solve the issues, prevent historical tragedy, and improve our society, we should acknowledge the past first, learning from history.

2021년 이스라엘-팔레스타인 분쟁

이스라엘과 팔레스타인 사이 갈등의 뿌리는 100년 전 일차 세계전쟁으로부터 시작된다. 1917년, 영국 정부는 팔레스타인에 유대인들의 고국을 건국하는 것에 지지를 표하는 “밸푸어 선언"을 공표한다. 그 당시 팔레스타인은 소수의 유대인들이 모여살던 오토만 제국의 자그마한 지역일 뿐이었다. 하지만, 이 밸푸어 선언은 영국이 이전에 중동의 아랍 국가들과 한 약속에 모순되는 발언이었다.

일차 세계전쟁 당시에 영국은 아랍 국가들의 지지를 받기 위해 만일 당국이 전쟁에서 승리한다면 오토만 제국을 제거하고 그 영토를 분배하여 각각의 아랍 국가들의 자치권을 보장하겠다는 약속을 했다. 1920년대부터 1940년대까지 유럽에서의 유대인들에 대한 차별과 박해 때문에 점점 더 많은 유대인들이 팔레스타인 지역으로 이주하자 아랍인들과 유대인들 사이의 갈등은 점점 더 악화됐다. 1947년, 유엔이 팔레스타인을 아랍 자치구역과 유대 자치구역으로 나누자는 해결안을 제시하였으나 그 영토에 전체적인 지배권을 주장하던 아랍인들이 이를 거절했다.

그리하여 팔레스타인과 이스라엘은 영토, 팔레스타인 난민, 그리고 팔레스타인 자치 국가 건국 등과 관련된 문제들로 인해 계속해서 현재진행형으로 갈등을 고조시켜왔다. 팔레스타인과 이스라엘 모두 공동의 문제 해결을 위해 25년이 넘게 평화를 위한 해결안을 서로 제시하고 있으나 그 하나도 양보하지 못하고 서로에게 동의하지 않고 있다.

가장 최근 일어난 폭력을 동반하는 갈등은 2021년 5월 10일에  발생했다. 오랫동안 축적된 갈등의 심지는 이스라엘 대법원의 예측된 판결인 Sheikh Jarrah (동예루살렘의 팔레스타인인 우세지역)에서의 팔레스타인인 여섯 가족 축출에 반대하는 동예루살렘의 팔레스타인인들의 시위가 불을 붙여주었다. 이스라엘과 Gaza strip (지중해의 팔레스타인 자치구역)에서는 시위, 폭동, 그리고 공습을 동반하는 여러 폭력이 11일간 발생했다. 이러한 습격들은 2021년 5월 21일 유엔에서부터 휴전 선언이 내려오면서 멈추게 되었지만 이로 인해 남녀노소를 불문하고 수많은 사상자들이 발생했다. 팔레스타인 사상자들이 이스라엘 사상자들보다 상대적으로 많았다.

2021 이스라엘- 팔레스타인 갈등은 현재 공존하는 역사를 잘 보여주는 적합한 예시이다. 현재 일어나고 있는 국제 상호 관계에 관련된 세계 문제들은 모두 1900년대쯤 시작하는 근대역사에서부터 시작되기에 역사는 현재 일어나는 시사 문제들을 이해하기 위한 필수적인 지식이다. 각 국가들은 예전부터 갈등이 고조되어 온 것일 수도 있고 또는 역사적 패턴을 따라갈 수도 있다. 따라서 이러한 문제 해결, 역사적 비극 재발 방지, 그리고 우리 세계의 발전을 위해서는 먼저 올바른 역사를 배우며 과거를 인지하고 인정하는 것이 중요하다.
