The number of devices connected to the internet, commonly called the internet of things (IoT), has increased dramatically since 2012 with the number going beyond 10 billion in 2020.10 billion devices require incredible amounts of power, mostly in the form of batteries, and with the number of IoT to continue to increase, sustaining that much will become an energy crisis.

Ben Calhoun and Dave Wentzloff, after completing their doctorates at MIT and continuing their work at their undergraduate alma maters, came together to found Everactive in 2012. Everactive aims to solve problems of getting rid of the battery and finding a new low-power wireless network with their ultra-low-power integrated circuits.

Calhoun’s research concentrated on low-power digital systems, while Wentzloff’s research explored low-power communication. Their product is the Eversensors, which utilizes ultra-low-power circuits and wireless communication. These sensors are self-sustaining, harvesting energy from their surroundings. These show much more potential than regular batteries in terms of scalability and cost less to operate.

Everactive first started working with the industrial field, specifically steam traps, but they hope to widen their area. Wearable consumer products and logistics are next on Everactive’s list. And, in the coronavirus situation, Everactive expects to play a great part in promoting self-powered systems and ubiquitous remote monitoring.

IoT를 위한 자체 동력 배터리

사물인터넷(IoT)이라고 불리는 인터넷에 연결된 기기의 수는 2012년 이후부터 급격하게 증가하기 시작하여 2020년에는 100억대를 넘어섰다. 100억 대의 장치는 대부분 배터리의 형태로 엄청난 양의 전력을 필요로 하며, IoT의 수가 계속 증가하기 때문에, 그 많은 양을 구하기 위한 위기가 될 것이다.

벤 칼훈 (Ben Calhoun)과 데이브 웬즐로프(Wentzloff)는 MIT에서 박사 학위를 마치고 학부 모교에서 연구를 계속한 후 2012년에 에버액티브Everactive)를 함께 설립하였다. 에버액티브는 초저전력 집적회로로 배터리의 필요성을 줄이고 새로운 저전력 무선 네트워크를 찾는 문제를 해결하는 것을 목표로 한다.

칼훈의 연구는 저전력 디지털 시스템에 집중하였고, 웬즐로프의 연구는 저전력 통신을 탐구하였다. 그들의 결과물은 초저전력 회로와 무선 통신을 활용하는 에버센서 (Eversensor)이다. 이 센서들은 자급자족하며 주변으로부터 에너지를 스스로 얻는다. 확장성과 작동 비용 측면에서 일반 배터리보다 휠씬 더 많은 잠재력을 보이고 있다.

에버액티브는 먼저 산업현장에서 활용되는 증기 트랩에 적용되었으며 더 많은 범위에 활용되도록 확장하려고 한다. 웨어러블 소비자 제품들과 물류 분석이 다음 단계라고 계획하고 있다. 또한, 코로나 바이러스가 경제에 큰 타격을 준 부분에서는 에버액티브는 자체 전력 시스템과 어디에서나 활용할 수 있는 원격 모니터링을 이용하고 이의 사용을 촉진하는 데 큰 역할을 할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
