Virtual Reality for Dementia PatientsUsing VR Therapy to Improve the Quality of Life for Dementia Patients

Many people think of Virtual Reality (VR) merely as a popular form of entertainment - in fact, these technologies are becoming a central field in medical care, especially for patients diagnosed with neurological disorders, including but not limited to Alzheimer’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease. Even before its application in advanced medical therapy, VR has been used in various ways to help people overcome their fears and anxieties, such as fear of heights and public speaking. Now, with the advent of its technology, VR is showing growing potential as a viable method to improve the quality of life for dementia patients.

VR is a computer-generated simulation in which a person can interact with a three-dimensional environment using special goggles or helmets. In a small study conducted by researchers from the University's School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA), 8 dementia patients were exposed to 5 different virtual environments. Key takeaways from the study include that the VR therapy allowed the patients to relive formative experiences and emotions, helping patients with skills such as memory recall and navigation that have been deteriorated with the progression of the disease. The research also found that the method of utilizing VR to allow patients to reminiscence about the past helps reduce aggression and improve their interactions with caregivers.

VR therapy not only helps patients improve their quality of life but also helps caregivers better empathize with their patients. It has long been noted that even health professionals demonstrate a lack of understanding of patients with dementia, given that the caregivers have never experienced for themselves the mental and physical challenges of the patients. Now, with the invention of a VR therapy that mimics how diseases alter people’s senses as they carry out everyday tasks, caregivers can better understand the needs and behaviors of the patients, thus providing better person-centered care.

Although more studies must be conducted on VR therapies to validate their effectiveness on dementia patients, millions of patients and their families are holding high hopes for this avant-garde research.
