The BOK (Bank of Korea) has recently mentioned that the new-coronavirus caused an unprecedented shock to the entire global economy, by putting a significant downward shift in price. Governor Lee Ju-you said that Korea's consumer prices fell 0.3% in May versus a year ago, after gaining 0.1% in April. Consumer price growth remained in the min-1 percent range in January before slowing down sharply after February, falling short of the BOK's inflation target of 2%. The BOK earlier expected consumer prices to rise 0.3% from the previous year, slower than the 0.4% on-year rise in 2019, the lowest inflation rate since the data began to compile in 1954. However, Lee predicted that inflation would recover at a slower pace or remain flat due to fundamental changes in overall economic activity by businesses and individuals even after the provision of COVID-19 pandemic subsidies.

The governor has said that the massive production setbacks caused by the pandemic are expected to push companies to accelerate automation to improve productivity, which is expected to cut labor costs, lowering inflation. He also mentioned that the economic shock from COVID-19 would change consumer behavior as well.

Based on historical experiences, households and businesses tended to reduce debt and increase savings after a large-scale virus outbreak or economic crisis due to pessimism about the future economy. After this massive virus outbreak, the term 'super-saver' might be present within the economy, with an extreme risk-averse attitude, especially if companies suffer massive layoffs and plunging sales in times of crisis. This attitude would slow down the recovery in spending and investment, which can have a downward pressure on inflation. However, there is no current deflation risk, due to measures to prevent the real economy from collapsing from the COVID-19 outbreak. Inflation will maintain after the pandemic ends.

한국은행은 최근 신종 코로나바이러스가 물가를 크게 낮추면서 전 세계 경제에 전례 없는 충격을 주었다고 발표했다. 이주열 지사는 소비자물가가 지난 4월에 0.1% 오른 뒤, 5월에는 1년 전과 비교해 0.3% 하락했다고 밝혔다. 소비자물가 상승률은 1월 1%대 중반을 유지하다가 2월 이후 급격히 하락하여, 한국은행의 인플레이션 목표치인 2%에 미치지 못했다. 앞서 한국은행은 소비자 물가가 작년보다 0.3% 상승해, 작년 대비 0.4% 상승보다 둔화해, 1954년 데이터 작성 이후 가장 낮은 물가 상승률을 기록할 것으로 예상했다. 그러나 이 지사는 코로나 팬데믹 보조금 지급 이후에도 기업과 개인의 전반적인 경제활동의 근본적인 변화로 인해, 인플레이션이 더딘 속도로 회복되거나 제자리걸음을 할 것으로 전망했다.

이 지사는 코로다 대유행으로 인한 대규모 생상 차질로 기업들이 자동화를 가속화해 생산성을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대되며, 이로 인해 인건비가 절감되어 인플레이션이 낮아질 것으로 기대된다고 발표했다. 또한 그는 COVID-19로 인한 경제적 충격이 소비자 행동도 변화시킬 것이라고 언급했다.

과거 경험을 바탕으로 가정과 기업은 미래 경제에 대한 비관론으로 인해 대규모 경제 위기가 발생한 후 부채를 줄이고 저축을 늘리는 경향을 보이고 있다. 이 대규모 바이러스 발생 이후, ‘슈퍼 세이버’라는 용어가 경제 내에 존재할 수 있는데, 특히 이러한 경제 위기 상황에서 기업들이 대규모 정리해고와 매출 급락을 겪는다면 더욱더 그러하다. 이러한 태도는 소비와 투자의 회복을 늦춰 인플레이션에 대한 하향 압력을 줄 수 있다. 그러나 코로나 팬데믹 발생 이후에, 경제가 붕괴되는 것을 막기 위한 조치 덕분에 현재의 디플레이션 위험은 없다. 인플레이션은 대유행이 끝난 후, 더욱더 올라갈 것이다.
