It was long believed that the purpose of business is to generate maximum profit for its shareholders, but COVID-19 and the subsequent spread of ESG (which stands for Environment, Social, and Governance) in the private sector have led people to view business as a potential force for good. Recently, ESG became a major focus for companies, especially investors looking to invest long-term in sustainable companies that generate stable economic and social value. This was made apparent with BlackRock announcing in 2020 that the world’s largest investment firm will immediately stop investing in companies that “present high sustainability-related risks.”

Apple is another key player that deserves attention. Its ambition to become carbon neutral does not stop with its achievements but applies throughout its entire supply chain under the “Supplier Clean Energy Program.” By cooperating with and prompting its suppliers, such as SK Hynix, to become carbon neutral, Apple is credited with playing an important role in expanding ESG practices to other companies and regions.

Despite the global steel manufacturer, POSCO being a major polluter, the company has played a pioneering role in advancing ESG in Korea. Like others, the company is making efforts to transition to renewable energy, but it is seeking new opportunities in the clean energy business by producing hydrogen fuel, which the company believes will become a major energy source in the future. By 2025 and 2030, the company plans to increase its hydrogen production by 70,000 and 500,000 tons, respectively, per year.

"Global companies are taking the lead in setting the standards for ESG, and more effort is needed to expand ESG from the best practices of a few players to the entire private sector," said Jae Jin Lim, the Head Mentor of Youth Impact and a former Researcher at the United Nations Global Compact Network Korea.

좋은 기업의 새로운 기준, ESG

오랫동안 비즈니스의 목적은 주주들을 위해 최대의 이익을 창출하는 것이었으나, 코로나의 여파가 오래 지속되고 이에 따라 민간 부문에서의 ESG(Environment·Social·Governance, 환경·사회·지배구조의 줄임말)의 중요성이 더욱 강조되면서, 사람들은 기업을 ‘선을 위한 잠재적인 힘’을 지닌 존재로 점차 인식하게 되었다. 최근 ESG는 기업 경영자들의 최대 관심사가 되었고, 안정적인 경제 및 사회적 가치를 창출하는 지속 가능한 기업에 장기 투자하고자 하는 투자자들에게 중요한 판단 요소가 되었다. 이러한 트랜드는 2020년, 세계 최대 투자 기업인 블랙록(BlackRock)이 '지속 가능성과 관련되어 높은 리스크를 가진 기업에 대한 투자를 즉각 중단할 것’이라고 발표하면서 더욱 명백해졌다.

애플은 ESG를 실천하는 대표적 기업 중 하나로서 자체적으로 탄소중립화를 선언한 것에 그치지 않고, '협력업체 청정 에너지 프로그램'에 따라 공급망 전체에 이러한 기준을 적용하도록 종용하고 있다. 따라서 애플은 SK하이닉스 등과 협약을 맺고 탄소중립화를 유도함으로써 ESG 목표를 타기업과 타지역으로 확대하는데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다.

또한 글로벌 철강업체 포스코는 그동안 오염물질 생산기업이라는 비난을 받아왔으나, 최근 국내 ESG 기업의 선도적인 역할을 하며 혁신적 행보를 보여주고 있다. 포스코는 신재생에너지로의 전환 사업에 힘쓸 뿐 아니라, 향후 주요 에너지원이라 불리는 수소 연료를 생산하여 청정에너지 사업의 새로운 기회를 모색하고 있다. 포스코는 연간 수소 생산량 목표를 2025년에 7만 톤, 2030년 50만 톤으로 늘려나갈 계획이다.

유엔글로벌콤팩트네트워크코리아의 전 연구원이자 봉사 단체 유스임팩트의 수석멘토인 임재진씨는 "최근 ESG 기준을 글로벌 기업들이 주도적으로 설정하고 있는데, 소수의 우수 기업에서 민간 영역 전체로 확대하기 위해서는 더 많은 노력이 필요하다"고 말했다.
