Netflix is the world's largest online video service (OTT) company, as well as South Korea.

The Covid-19 outbreak has cut off people's steps toward the theater. In fact, according to a recent survey by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the use of screenings and performance halls before the Corona outbreak accounted for 11.7%, but it has decreased significantly to 3.6%. On the other hand, content use at home surged from 51% to 70%.

In addition, according to the Korea Film Council, theater sales fell 73.3 percent to 510 billion units last year from 1.4 trillion won in 2019. This situation continued until the first half of this year. From January to April, the number of viewers was below 3 million per month.

The movie's status fell further as leading film companies such as CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox raised movie tickets, and famous films such as "Time to Hunt,” "The Call,” "Space Sweepers,” and "Night in Paradise" released on Netflix.

Naturally, Netflix benefited from the slump in theaters. According to an audit report by Netflix Services Korea, sales and operating profit reached 415.45 billion won and 8.82 billion won last year. Compared to the previous year's sales of KRW 185.85 billion and operating profit of KRW 2.23 billion, it increased by 123.5% and 295%, respectively. As the size of Netflix's domestic market has grown, various large-scale investments have also been made.

However, the problem has also been revealed. This is because there has been criticism that Netflix avoids taxes despite considerable profits in the Korean OTT market. Eventually, through a tax investigation, the National Tax Service imposed a tax collection of about 80 billion won on Netflix along with hundreds of millions of won in fines.

In addition, Netflix's users have declined for the third consecutive month since January, resulting in an end to the benefits from Corona. I look forward to seeing what Netflix's fate will be.

넷플릭스는 국내뿐만 아니라 세계 최대 온라인 동영상 서비스(OTT) 업체이다.

코로나19 사태로 인해서 극장을 향한 사람들이 발걸음이 끊겼다. 실제로, 한국콘텐츠진흥원의 최근 조사에 따르면 코로나 발생 전 상영?공연장 이용은 11.7% 비중을 차지하고 있었지만 코로나 이후 3.6% 수준으로 대폭 감소했다. 반면 집에서의 콘텐츠 이용이 51%에서 70%로 급증했다.

또한, 영화진흥위원회에 따르면 지난해 극장 매출액은 1조 4037억의 2019년 대비 무려 73.3%나 감소한 5100억 대에 그쳤다. 이러한 상황은 올해 상반기까지 이어졌다. 1월부터 4월까지 관객 수는 매달 300만 명 대를 밑돌았다.

화룡점정으로 CGV, 롯데시네마, 메가박스 등의 대표 영화사가 영화 관람료를 인상하고, 기대작들이 줄줄이 개봉을 연기하거나, '사냥의 시간’ '콜' '승리호' '낙원의 밤' 등이 넷플릭스를 통해 공개되면서 영화의 위상은 더욱 떨어졌다.

자연스럽게 극장의 침체로 인해 이익을 본 것은 넷플릭스다. 넷플릭스 서비시스 코리아의 감사보고서에 따르면, 지난해 매출은 4154억 5000만 원, 영업이익은 88억 2000만 원을 기록했다. 전년 매출 1858억 5000만 원과 영업이익 22억 3000만 원에 비해 각각 123.5%와 295%씩 증가하였다. 넷플릭스 국내 시장의 규모가 커지면서 다양한 대규모 투자도 이루어졌다.

하지만, 문제점 또한 드러났다. 넷플릭스가 국내 OTT 시장에서의 막대한 수익에도 불구하고 세금을 회피한다는 비판이 일었기 때문이다. 결국, 세무조사를 통해 국세청은 넷플릭스에 약 800억 원의 세금 추징을 과태료 수억 원과 함께 부과했다.

또한, 넷플릭스의 이용자가 1월 이후 3개월 연속으로 감소하면서 코로나로 인한 이득이 끝나간다는 분석이 나오고 있다. 넷플릭스의 운명이 어떻게 될지 앞으로의 귀추가 기대되는 바이다.
