When did many modern sports that we enjoy today, not our traditional sports such as Ssireum, come into our country, and how did they develop? I am interested in sports, so I want to choose a related job in the future. Therefore, I'd like to look at the beginning of modern sports in Korea.

During the Joseon Dynasty, the spirit of self-disciplined mind was important, and the work of the body was not significant. Then, with the opening of the port, people got to know that Western children were healthy with exercise like gymnastics since they were young. People thought that healthy people were national power to build up the strength of the country. In other words, exercises like gymnastics began like military training, not for leisure, but as a way to build national strength.

Current sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, cycling, tennis have been introduced by Western missionaries, diplomats, and students who studied in Japan. It was first introduced mainly through school physical education and spread through sports days. Sports that were newly introduced before 1910 after the opening of the port were gymnastics in 1895, track and field in 1896, swimming in 1898, golf in 1900, shooting in 1904, baseball in 1905, bicycle and judo in 1906, basketball in 1907, ice skating and tennis in 1908 and horseback riding in 1909. Except for judo and kendo, most of them were introduced by Westerners who came to Joseon.

Despite the fact that intellectuals during the enlightenment period spread the importance of sports, sports did not seem to be considered very high by people at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. When people saw tennis, they said, "What are you doing by hitting the ball on such a hot day? Let's just have a servant do it." The response to women's physical education was, even more, worse, so there was a story that people were reluctant to have graduates of Ewha school as their daughters-in-law due to bare-handed gymnastics. I wonder how I, who loves sports so much, would have lived at that time.

The first sports day was held outdoors on May 2, 1896, for students who went on a picnic under the leadership of teacher Hutchison. It is said that the sports day centered on the school was a place where visitors could see the initiative and spirit of the Joseon people.

The spread of modern sports in Korea is thought to have had a positive meaning in spreading new ideas about sports activities. The sports environment and equipment used at that time were too comparable with what we have today, and the fact that physical education was encouraged not for leisure but to develop the power of the country shows the need of that era. However, wouldn't it have been the same for people to enjoy sports and have teams playing together?

씨름과 같은 전통 체육이 아닌 현재 많이 즐기는 근대 스포츠들은 우리나라에 언제 들어오고 어떻게 발전하게 되었을까? 스포츠에 관심이 많고 향후 관련 직업을 희망하고 있어서 우리나라 근대 스포츠의 시작을 살펴보고자 한다.

조선시대는 유학과 같은 정신을 중요시했고 신체를 써서 하는 일을  중요하게 생각하지 않았다. 그러나 개항 이후 서구 사람들은 어렸을 때부터 체조 같은 운동으로 몸을 건강하게 한다는 사실을 알게 되었고, 나라의 힘을 기르기 위해서는 건강한 백성이 곧 국력이라는 인식을 하게 되었다. 즉 체조 같은  운동이 여가를 위해서가 아니라 국가의 힘을 기르는 방법으로 군사 훈련처럼 시작된 것이다.
 
축구, 야구, 농구, 자전거 타기, 정구 (테니스) 같은 지금의 스포츠는 서구의 선교사들이나 외교관, 일본 유학생들에 의해 도입되었다. 주로 학교 체육을 통해 처음 소개되었고 운동회를 통해 확산되었다. 개항 이후 1910년 이전까지 새롭게 소개되거나 도입된 스포츠는 1895년 체조, 1896년 육상과 검도, 1898년 수영, 1900년 골프, 1904년 사격, 1905년 야구, 1906년 자전거와 유도, 1907년 농구, 1908년 빙상과 정구, 1909년 승마 등이다. 유도와 검도를 빼고는 대부분 조선에 온 서양인들에 의해 전해졌다.

개화기 지식인들이 스포츠의 중요성을 전파했음에도 불구하고 조선 말기에는 사람들에게 스포츠가 그다지 중요하게 받아들여지지 않았던 것 같다. 정구하는 모습을 보고  “이렇게 더운 날에 손수 공을 쳐서 무엇하오. 하인이나 시키지”라고 했다고 한다. 여성의 체육에 대해서는 반응이 더욱 심각하여  이화학당에서는 맨손체조를 가르치는 것이 문제 되어 이화 출신은 며느리로 삼지 않는다는 이야기가 있었다니 이렇게 스포츠를 좋아하는 내가 조선시대에 태어났으면 어떻게 살았을까 싶다.

최초의 운동회는 1896년 5월 2일 교사 허치슨의 지도하에 소풍을 간 학생들을 대상으로 야외에서 열렸다. 학교를 중심으로 열린 운동회는 관람자들에게 조선 민족의 진취성과 패기만만한 민족정기를 보여주는 자리였다고 한다.

우리나라 근대 스포츠의 전파는 체육 활동에 대한 새로운 사상을 전파한 긍정적인 의미가 있었다고 생각된다. 그 당시 사람들은 현재 우리와는 비교할 수 없을 만큼 체육 장비나 환경이 열악했고, 개인의 여가가 아닌 오직 국가의 힘을 기르기 위해 체육이 장려되었다는 사실은 그 시대의 시대상을 보여준다. 그러나 스포츠를 즐기고 팀이 함께 경기를 하는 사람들의 마음만큼은 지금과 같지 않았을까?
