Korea’s digital therapeutics (DTx) industry is still in the developing process. Among the few companies, Gangnam Post had interviewed Bryan Kim, head of MedKit. Mr. Kim earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University as well as a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University, in Computer Graphics. After working in the Production team for the famous game “Fortnite”, Mr.Kim started his startup company MedKit.

The company’s name shows that they have a solid purpose to provide aid for patients. Specifically, MedKit develops digital therapeutics that utilize Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Showing imaginary objects in real life through the phone screen, the apps are being developed to guide patients to act in certain ways and help to increase their activity and sociability. MedKit is currently aimed to treat patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or depression. Mr. Kim’s experience is also utilized by putting game elements in development to stimulate patients and use the app more effectively.

Moreover, Mr.Kim focuses on developing more unique DTxs than others. As other DTXs focus on low functioning autism patients, he wants to help the high functioning autism patients as well. For patients with depression, Mr. Kim wants to develop an app that makes the patient more active during treatment that doesn’t involve meditation or an audiobook.

MedKit is currently developing an app called “Double Walker.” In order for ASD patients to have a straight pattern of life, this app combines the daily routine with a VR game. Through this app, patients could continue their daily tasks and fight monsters. Excluding personal info, the app can track the location in order to check if the patients are effectively living their lives. MedKit works with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital to experiment with their app. The patients in the hospital will use the app and will provide data through interviews.

MedKit is working to help many more patients and is trying to launch their app in America as well. As a final note, Mr.Kim had mentioned that he wants others to learn that games can also be a way of helping other people.

게임으로 환자들을 돕는 앱 개발중

한국의 디지털 치료제 산업은 아직 발달 단계에 있다. 소수의 회사 가운데 메드키트(MedKit) 라는 회사의 김우성 대표와 인터뷰를 나누어 보았다.

김우성 대표는 미국에 있는 퍼듀대학과 카네기멜론대학에서 컴퓨터그래픽 학위를 취득한 프로그램 개발자이다. 미국의 게임회사인 에픽게임즈에서 “포트나이트 (Fortnite)"라는 유명한 게임의 제작부서를 담당하다 지금의 메드키트를 창립하게 되었다고 한다.

이 회사는 이름을 통해 알 수 있듯이 환자들을 돕기 위한 목적을 갖고 시작된 회사이다. 구체적으로, 메드키트는 증강현실(VR)을 이용하는 디지털 치료제들을 개발하고 있다. 핸드폰 화면을 통해 현실에 추가되는 가상의 물체들을 통하여 환자들이 특정 행동을 취해 활동성 및 사회성을 증가시킬 수 있도록 도와준다. 메드키트의 디지털 치료제는 자폐 아동 및 우울증 환자들을 위한 개발 방향성을 잡고 있다. 김우성 대표의 경험을 바탕으로 게임의 요소들을 넣어서 조금 더 효과적으로 환자들이 앱을 사용할 수 있도록 개발중이라고 한다.

또한 김우성 대표의 개인적인 앱 개발 목적은 차별화된 앱을 개발하기 위해서라고 한다. 자폐 아동용 디지털 치료제는 저기능 아동에게만 집중되기에 고기능 아동들도 도와주고 싶다고 전했다. 그리고 우울증 환자용 디지털 치료제는 명상이나 오디오북을 탑재해 정적인 상황을 만들어, 좀 더 활동적으로 우울증을 치료하고 싶기에 개발을 시작했다고 한다.

김우성 대표와 함께 메드키트가 현재 개발중인 앱은 “더블워커 (Double Walker)”라는 앱이다. 자폐 아동들이 올바른 생활 패턴을 잡을 수 있도록 하루 일과와 증강현실 게임을 합친 앱이다. 아동들이 스케줄을 진행하고 증강현실 캐릭터로 몬스터랑 전투를 할 수 있다. 개인정보를 제외한 위치정보를 추적해 아동이 실제로 앱을 통한 일상 활동을 진행중인지 확인할 수 있다고 한다. 아직 개발중이기에 효과를 더 자세히 실험하기 위해서 분당서울대학교병원  환자들에게 앱을 사용하게 해주고 인터뷰를 통하여 자료를 얻는다고 한다.

메드키트는 현재 더 많은 환자들을 돕기 위한 디지털 치료제를 개발중이고 미국 진출을 위해 노력하고 있다고 한다. 마지막으로 김우성 대표는 게임도 사람들에게 도움을 줄 수 있다는 것을 알려주고 싶다고 전했다.
