Upcycling and Recycling

Recently, due to the pandemic, almost all people are wearing masks and are utilizing screen dividers to prevent the virus from spreading. Although these products are essential to prevent Covid-19, a tremendous amount of waste is produced. In fact, according to Korea JoongAng Daily, based on the reports of the Ministry of Environment, plastic wastes - including masks and plastic dividers - have increased from 1,757 tons per day in 2019 to 1,998 tons per day in 2020 - which is about 11.3 percent increase. To reduce the tremendous amount of trash produced every day, it is important to recycle the products. However, despite household waste sorting efforts, the recycling rate of plastic waste is very low and most of it is being incinerated or landfilled. Recently, there are good companies to solve this environmental issue and SuperBin is one of them. It is a social venture presenting a solution for a sustainable plastic industry based on AI, IoT, and Big Data.

Individuals can trade recyclable goods with digital equipment through a program called ‘Supermoa’ and’ Nefron’. ‘Supermoa’ is a program that normal people that have the license given by SuperBin can sell clean recyclable products such as cans and PET bottles and get rewarded with a point based on the weight of the recyclable products brought by the person. ‘Nefron’, an AI robot that automatically categorizes recyclable goods such as PET bottles, is used to collect, categorize, and compress recyclable goods. Jeungbin Kim, the founder of SuperBin, said, “Supermoa's expansion requires the development of apps and digital equipment to communicate with Supermoa operators, vehicles and participants in the region, and ultimately a scrap warehouse permit to collect circulating resources gathered through Supermoa.” As Mr. Kim mentioned, for further expansion of plastic upcycling, the overall structure of the plastic reprocessing industry should be upgraded.
