Many individuals are constrained in their activities due to the pandemic, and some of them roam around looking for anything significant to accomplish during this catastrophe. I'd like to talk about and introduce an activity I completed last summer. The majority of people enjoy music and have played at least one instrument at some point in their lives. People who know how to play traditional instruments, on the other hand, are hard to come by. I think this is a fascinating moment and an opportunity to learn a new instrument, particularly one of the traditional Korean instruments, the Haegeum.

The Haegeum is one of the representative traditional Korean string instruments. Unlike other familiar string instruments such as violin, or the guitar which has four and six strings each, Haegeum makes sounds with only 2 strings. The haegeum is widely used in Korean traditional music. It has a deep range of expressions and emotions, which is specialized to express the unique sorrow, melancholy feeling, sadness, and even humorous feeling of Korean people and culture. It consists of a rodlike neck, a hollow wooden soundbox, and of course the two strings that are made of silk.

I suggest learning Haegeum because it is easy to learn compared to other traditional Korean wind instruments like Daegeum or Danso, which is hard to make a sound. In my experience, I learned to make sounds of Haegeum and play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars’ in just 30 minutes. Of course, it is hard to make pleasant sounds and requires lots of practice to sounds professional like any other instrument, but the process is worth trying. After one month of learning it, I could play Korean popular folk songs ‘Mugunghwa’ and ‘Arirang’ at the recital at the end of the lesson.

From my experience, I want people to be not afraid to learn something new - something different from what you had experienced before. Hope you are spending a healthy and meaningful time during the summer and maybe try something new, like learning how to play the haegeum.
 

새로운 것을 배우기에 늦은 때는 없다
한 달 동안 해금 배우기

팬데믹으로 인해 많은 사람들이 활동에 제한 받고 있고 뜻깊은 활동을 하려고 방황하는 사람들도 있다. 필자는 여름에 했던 뜻깊은 경험을 소개하려고 한다. 대부분의 사람들은 음악을 좋아하고 적어도 한가지의 악기를 배워본 경험이 있을 것이다. 하지만 많은 사람들은 한국 전통악기를 연주하는 것이 친숙하지 않을 것이다. 팬데믹으로 혼란한 이 시기가 새로운 악기, 특히 한국 전통악기를 배우기에 좋은 시간인 것 같다.

해금은 한국의 대표적인 현악기 중 하나이다. 바이올린 등 익숙한 현악기나 기타가 각각 4현과 6현으로 된 것과는 달리 해금은 2현만으로 소리를 낸다. 해금은 한국 전통 음악에서 널리 사용된다. 표현과 감정의 폭이 깊어 한국인의 독특한 슬픔, 우울함, 슬픔, 심지어 해학적인 느낌까지도 표현할 수 있다. 해금은 막대 같은 목, 속이 빈 나무 음향 상자, 그리고 비단으로 만들어진 두 개의 끈으로 구성되어 있다.

대금이나 단소 같은 소리를 내기 어려운 한국 전통 관악기에 비해 배우기 쉽기 때문에 해금을 배우기 적합하다고 추천한다. 이 악기는 30분 만에 해금 소리와 '반짝반짝 작은 별'을 연주하는 법을 배울 정도로 접근성이 좋은 악기다. 물론 예쁜 소리를 내기 어렵고 여느 악기처럼 전문적으로 들리려면 많은 연습이 필요하지만 그 과정은 시도해 볼 가치가 있다. 해금을 배운 지 한 달 후에, 나는 수업의 마지막에 있는 연주회에서 한국의 인기 있는 민요 '무궁화'와 '아리랑'을 연주할 수 있었다.

필자의 이런 경험을 바탕으로 사람들이 새로운 것을 배우는 것을 두려워하지 않기를 바란다. 이전에 경험했던 것과 완전히 다른 해금 연주법 같은 새로운 것을 배워보며 여름 동안 건강하고 의미 있는 시간을 보내길 바란다.
