NETFLIX: A Digital Revolution

The Netflix original series ‘Squid Game’ successfully placed first in 83 countries. This record, being an all-time new record, shows how Netflix has changed the whole media industry. The vast popularity that Netflix has been spotlighted on was all possible because of Netflix’s capacity to control a huge amount of data and to utilize specific systems to fulfill its users.

Firstly, Netflix provides personalized movie recommendations by utilizing the history of other users with similar tastes to recommend what the users may be most interested in watching next. This links with Netflix’s auto-generation and personalization of thumbnails. Using thousands of video frames from existing movies and shows, Netflix annotates these images and ranks them to identify the highest likelihood of resulting on the user.

Secondly, Netflix also uses data science to give its best performance to its users. Using data to help decide where and when best to shoot a movie set regarding the given schedule, budget, and requirements, Netflix started scouting for its movie production. Also, using historical data of when quality control checks have failed in the past, such as syncing of subtitles, Netflix predicts when a manual check is most beneficial in what could otherwise be a very laborious process. And, most importantly, Netflix uses past viewing data to predict bandwidth usage to help Netflix decide when to cache regional servers for faster load times during peak demand, ultimately increasing streaming quality.

Looking at Netflix today, it wouldn’t have been able to make a massive success through media without the proper utilization of technology such as artificial intelligence or data science.
