Are GMO¡¯s Safe?The growing controversy of Genetically Modified Organisms

Genetically Modified Organisms, commonly referred to as GMOs, are increasingly becoming the global topic of controversy. First introduced in the 1970s, molecular engineering techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This evolution has opened in the recent discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 system (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), a genetic engineering technique used to edit DNA by locating and deleting, inserting, or modifying genes.

Despite the fact that over 90% of scientists believe GMOs are safe, the public continues to be skeptical of their true consequences. The fundamental problem is a lack of competent GMO research. The first consumer GMO food was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration until 1994. (FDA). Despite the fact that hundreds of millions of tests have already been carried out, establishing a definitive level of safety for long-term GMO use would take decades more investigation.

Concerns have been made about the development of allergenic characteristics or the change of bodily functioning, both of which could have deadly consequences for the human body. The majority of studies are currently conducted on animals, making it impossible to determine the exact consequences of GMO eating on humans. Some studies have linked GMO foods to changes in metabolism, renal and liver function, and fertility, which is concerning. In one experiment, hamsters were fed a diet of genetically modified soy for three generations; by the third generation, the hamsters showed evidence of impaired fertility, generating just half as many offspring as hamsters fed non-GM diets.

On the other hand, numerous benefits of GMO consumption have been indicated. This includes enhanced crop yields and nutritional quality and increased resistance to pests. Improved crop yields and nutritional quality is some of the main goals of farmers, highly appealing to the agricultural industry. This characteristic not only boosts farming efficiency but also, therefore, increases the ability to rapidly adapt and meet consumer demand. Moreover, increased resistance to pests allows reduced use of insecticides while increasing yields. This enhances safety for farmers, the environment, and consumers, all while lowering the cost of production and increasing availability.

Consumers who are concerned about GMO consumption should explore a more sophisticated approach rather than outright rejection. Consider spending some time learning about genetic engineering and its benefits, especially as our new generation of climate change continues to gradually take a greater toll on food supplies.
