Jagyeongnu is a self-striking water clock invented during the Joseon dynasty. While most people have heard about Jagyeongnu and its significance, most of them do not know the mechanism behind how Jagyeongnu works. As a result, I'd like to inform you about Jagyeongnu's structure and application.
 
The water clock, the digital time signal generator, and the announcement system are the three parts of the Jagyeongnu's structure. The water clock, for starters, provides and regulates the water vessels. The other two water vessels manage the water flow to keep it constant as one container gets water. The water will then be contained in the last water vessel, and the rod in the last water vessel will float steadily.
 
The rod that floats from the last water vessel then impacts the wooden columns at the digital time signal generator. It directs the metal balls to move through the course at all times of the day and night.
 
Finally, using gods’ figures and instruments such as bells, drums, and gongs, the time announcing system displays the time visually and audibly. Every two hours, the visualization system rotates the '12 horary figurines' and displays the matching horary figures via the window. During the day, the auditory system rings a bell every 2 hours, while at night, the gong and drum are played every 30 minutes.
 
 
Jagyeongnu uses the energy transition of the water flow to show the precise time with this intricate construction. Water gently flows from the large water container to the smaller water container in the same amount per time into the cylinder. The rod will float and signal each time as water is poured into the cylinder. The inventor employed various types of indicator rods for seasonal words to represent the relative time scale. The indicating surface in each rod is divided into twelve dual hours, each divided into eight intervals. The tip of the chopstick, as the rod rises, causes the metal ball to slide down every 2 hours, striking the drum, gong, or bell at the appointed time. It also affects and creates the prepared dolls, giving the impression that it is announcing the precise time to keep the citizen's life on track.
 
Jagyeongnu assisted citizens in recognizing important times such as midnight, noon, and dinner. Understanding Jagyeongnu's principle will aid us in presenting the magnificence of the Korean historical water clock - Jagyeongnu.

자격루는 조선시대에 만들어진 자동 알림 물시계이다. 많은 사람들은 조선시대의 물시계인 자격루에 대한 우수성에 대해선 많이 안다. 하지만, 사람들은 자격루가 어떻게 작동을 하는지에 대해서는 잘 모른다. 그러므로 여러분들에게 자격루가 어떻게 이루어져 있고 어떤 방식으로 작동하는지 설명해보려 한다.

자격루의 구조는 세가지 부분으로 나누어져 있는데 물시계부, 디지털 시간 전환부분, 그리고 시간 안내부분이다. 먼저, 물시계부는 물을 공급하고 물의 흐름을 조절한다. 첫번째의 수통이 물을 담을수록 나머지 두 수통은은 물의 흐름을 조절하여 물이 일정한 속도로 흐르도록 조절한다. 그 다음, 물이 마지막 수통에 채워지면 수통에 있는 막대가 천천히 떠오른다.

다음으로 디지털 시간 전환부분은 마지막 수통에 물이 차오르며 막대가 나무판자를 때리는 곳이다. 이로서 하루의 오전과 오후의 시작에 나무판자가 금속 구슬을 움직여 구슬이 길을 통해 나아간다. 

마지막으로, 시간 안내부분에서는 시간을 십이지신 인형과 종, 북, 그리고 징을 통해 시각적, 청각적으로 시간을 나타낸다, 시각화 시스템에서는 십이지신 인형을 회전시켜 두 시간마다 해당되는 십이지신 인형을 보여준다. 동시에 청각화 시스템에서는 종이 두시간마다 울리며, 징과 북의 경우 밤에 30분마다 울린다.

이러한 복잡한 구조를 통해 자격루는 물의 에너지 전환을 활용하여 정확한 시간을 나타낸다. 물이 가장 큰 수통에 들어가면서 물이 채워질수록 작은 물통을 통과하며 일정한 양의 물이 실린더에 채워지게 된다. 실린더에 물이 채워지며, 막대가 일정한 시간마다 일정한 양만큼 떠오르게 된다. 상대적인 시간을 표현하기 위해서 그들은 계절마다 다른 막대를 사용했다고 한다. 막대에는 두 시간 간격으로 시간이 표시가 되어 있고, 각 시간은 8개의 구간으로 나눠져 있다. 막대가 떠오를수록, 막대 위 표시의 끝부분이 금속 구슬을 부딪히게 하여 매 두시간마다 떨어지게 되고, 구슬은 북, 징, 혹은 종을 정해진 시간에 치게 되는 것이다. 게다가 금속 구슬의 무게의 충격을 통해서 준비된 인형들이 나와 정확한 시간을 나타낼 수 있도록 도와준다.

자격루는 당시 시민들에게 정오, 자정, 그리고 세끼 식사 시간 등 중요한 시간을 정확히 알려주는데 큰 도움을 주었다. 이를 보고 자격루의 원리까지 알아간다면, 많은 사람들에게 자격루의 우수성을 설명하는데 더 큰 도움이 될 것이다.
