Riot Games announced last year that the world championship for their game League of Legends would be held in China for the second year in a row. The decision was made due to the widespread distribution of COVID-19 plans, which limited individuals to only watching the finals offline. This move was met with some opposition. The championship was supposed to be held in the United States at first. Wuhan was also one of the cities chosen by Riot to host the world championship. Given that COVID's starting point was Wuhan, many League of Legends players viewed it as a possible risk for the esports community. Fortunately, in 2021, the final decision was to conduct the championships in Iceland, a relatively safe location.

Such as this incident, Riot Games recently has made debatable actions that show a bias towards China. This is assumed by the fact that their parent company is Tencent, the biggest Chinese technology company. The game development also shows a possibility of Tencent’s involvement. Seraphine, a character within League of Legends, was released last year during the world championships. Riot Games formed KDA, a KPOP ensemble in which real vocalists take on the roles of League of Legends characters. Seraphine made an appearance in Riot Games' music video, singing in Chinese. Korean fans ridiculed the move, claiming that Chinese in a KPOP song had never happened before and that the "K" in "KPOP" was meaningless.

The Korean teams competing in the 2021 World Championships fought against the possibly biased company by showing their outstanding performance. All 4 Korean teams went to the Quarterfinals, with 3 going up to the Semifinals as well as Damwon KIA, the defending world champions, going to the finals.

편애적인 롤드컵?
한국, 다시 한번 반격하다

작년, 리그오브레전드를 만든 라이엇 게임즈는 2년 연속 월드 챔피언십(롤드컵)을 중국에서 개최하기로 발표했다. 심지어 예정된 중국의 개최도시 중 하나인 우한은 코로나19의 시작도시였다는 점에서 여러 논쟁이 있었고 많은 리그오브레전드 유저들이 선수들에게 잠재적인 위험요소가 될것이라고 걱정했다. 

다행히 최종적으로 2021년에는 비교적 코로나로부터 안전한 아이슬랜드에서 롤드컵을 열기로 결정되었다. 아이슬란드에서 이미 지난 5월 국제대회인 미드시즌 인비테이셔널을 개최했었기에 지난번보다 훨씬 더 안정적이고 순조롭게 롤드컵을 열 것으로 보인다. 
    
라이엇 게임즈는 최근 들어 논쟁거리가 될 만한 중국에게 편애적인 행동들을 보여주고 있다. 중국의 가장 큰 IT 기업인 텐센트가 라이엇 게임즈의 상위 조직이기 때문으로 예상된다. 

게임 개발에도 텐센트의 영향을 받고 있는 모습이 여러군데에서 보여지고 있다. 세라핀이라는 리그오브레전드 캐릭터는 작년 롤드컵 기간에 맞춰 출시되었는데 이 캐릭터의 옷차림을 바꾸는 스킨을 KDA 테마로 정했다. KDA는 라이엇 게임즈가 개발한 KPOP 그룹으로 실제 가수들이 캐릭터들의 목소리를 대신해 부른다. 세라핀은 라이엇이 개발한 뮤직 비디오에도 출연하며 중국어로 노래를 불렀다. 외모는 외국인처럼 생겼는데도 불구하고 중국어를 쓰고 있어 의아해 하는 반응이 많았다. 한국 리그오브레전들의 팬들은 라이엇 게임즈가 'KPOP'의 'K'를 존중하지 않고 있다며 매우 부정적인 반응을 보이고 있다.
   
2021년 월드 챔피언십에서 한국 팀들은 중국에 대한 편애가 의심되는 라이엇 게임즈에게 자신들의 실력으로 반격을 했다. 4개의 한국 팀 모두가 8강에 진출했고, 4강에는 3개의 한국팀이 올라갔으며, 챔피언 자리를 방어하는 담원 기아도 결승 무대에 다시 올랐다.
