In modern society, people possess a clear, distinct line between extroverts and introverts. An extroverted person is more outgoing, sociable, and an introverted person is more quiet, hardworking. The statistics estimate that extroverts outnumber introverts significantly, approximately by a 3 to 1 ratio. It is still a controversial topic whether these particular characters are formed primarily by external factors or genetics. Francis Galton, the English polymath, named this debate “nature vs nurture”.    

The proponent of the “nature” view argues that human beings possess inherent personalities that can never be changed by external influences. According to them, one’s destiny whether he or she would become an extrovert or introvert is predetermined, and there are no way parents could transform. 

However, the book Educated, written by Tara Westover in 2018, advocates for opposing views. It depicts a woman’s childhood memory and how her surroundings, including her parents, brothers, friends, and schools, had transformed her entrenched personality. As shown by the book, one’s character can always change throughout a lifetime. Maintaining the belief of the “nature” view would prevent individuals from endeavoring and attempting to change their characters because they believe that their personalities are predestined. 

There is still no definite answer to this question. More psychological and medical researchers are needed for one view to winning over another. However, regardless of whether one view is correct or not, children must be provided with a refined, liberated environment for them to represent their personalities freely without oppressive forces. Every personality has its strength and there is no need to labor for a change.

성격 형성에 있어 아동기 환경의 심리적 영향

현대 사회에서 외향적인 사람과 내향적인 사람 사이에는 명확하고 뚜렷한 경계를 가지고 있다. 외향적인 사람은 더 외향적이고 사교적이며, 내향적인 사람은 더 조용하고 근면하다. 통계에 따르면 외향적인 사람이 내향적인 사람보다 약 3:1 비율로 훨씬 많다. 이러한 특정 특성이 외부 요인과 유전 중 무엇에 의해 형성되는지는 여전히 논란의 여지가 있는 주제이다. 영국의 수학자인 Francis Galton은 이 논쟁을 "본성 대 양육"이라고 명명했다.

'자연' 관점의 지지자는 인간은 외부 영향에 의해 결코 변경될 수 없는 고유한 특성을 가지고 있다고 주장한다. 그들에 따르면 외향적인 사람이 될 것인지 내향적인 사람이 될 것인지는 운명으로 인해 이미 정해져 있고 부모가 바꿀 수 있는 방법은 전혀 없다.

그러나 Tara Westover가 2018년에 쓴 책 Educated는 반대되는 견해를 옹호한다. 이 책은 그녀의 부모, 형제, 친구, 학교를 포함한 주변 환경이 그녀의 확고한 캐릭터를 어떻게 변화시켰는지 묘사한다. 책에서 알 수 있듯이, 사람의 성격은 인생을 사는 동안 항상 변할 수 있다. “양육”대신 "본성"의 의견을 믿는 것은 개인이 자신의 성격이 이미 정해져 있다고 믿게 되어 자신의 성격을 바꾸려고 노력하는 것을 막는다.

이 질문에 대한 명확한 해답은 아직 없다. 한 견해가 다른 견해를 이기려면 더 많은 심리학 및 의학적 연구가 필요하다. 그러나 하나의 견해가 옳든 그르든 간에, 아이들이 억압적인 힘없이 자신의 캐릭터를 자유롭게 표현할 수 있도록 세련되고 해방된 환경을 제공해야 한다. 모든 특성에는 고유한 장점이 있으며, 굳이 이러한 성격을 바꾸기 위해 노력할 필요는 없다.
