Racism, Chronic Stress, and Pregnancy OutcomeChronic Stress - The main cause of Infant Mortality Among African Americans
ÀÌÁö¿¹ °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2022.01.06 23:25

Most people believe that the main cause of the infant mortality disparity is a difference in communities or environments between Caucasians and African Americans. The issue, however, is more than just the disparity between the neighborhoods. The chronic stress caused by racism has a significant impact on pregnancy outcomes, such as infant mortality, preterm birth, and more.

According to the documentary "When the Bough Breaks (1995)," even though the individual women have similar settings, and similar backgrounds, health, and more, the race and how they are dealing with different experiences daily cause different levels of chronic stress. This is the fundamental reason why African Americans have a higher infant mortality rate than Caucasians. During and before pregnancy, racism and chronic stress have a major impact on pregnancy outcomes, such as infant death, early birth, and more. When they compared the weights of African-born blacks, US-born blacks, and US-born whites as infants, they discovered that the weights of African-born blacks and US-born whites were similar on the graph, while the weights of US-born blacks were significantly lower. This finding shows that racism has a major impact on infant mortality rates. When compared to individuals who are not born prematurely, premature labor babies may face health challenges throughout their lives.

Racism causes chronic stress, which affects not just newborn mortality and preterm labor, but also individual lives. Chronic stress will eventually lead to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Being African American and continually thinking about how they are discriminated against daily causes not just a psychological and mental reaction, but also a physical reaction.
