IGOs and the ImpactThe Scale of Impact

Many IGOs have sprung up as a result of the world's growing globalization. Political globalization has resulted in the formation of IGOs, which are a product of continual contacts between governments and attempts to unite the world on political concerns. IGOs influenced world politics significantly by altering the concept of state sovereignty and inciting nationalism.

IGOs have posed a challenge to the traditional concept of sovereignty in global politics. The 1648 Peace of Westphalia says that states should have sovereign equality and should not interfere with the sovereignty of other states. IGOs like the UNSC and the EU, on the other hand, violate state sovereignty significantly because they are supranational organizations that require nations to give up some level of external and internal legal sovereignty to join. The UNSC's resolutions are frequently binding, and sanctions are a typical technique of penalizing governments that do not implement them. Sanctions are a direct challenge to a state's domestic sovereignty, as the UNSC tries to change a state's governing decisions. IGOs have questioned Westphalia's traditional definition and embodiment of sovereignty.

Another effect of IGOs is the increase of nationalism when individual citizens in member nations lose authority. The European Refugee Crisis, which peaked in the mid-late 2010s, is a prime example of power being taken away. As a result of ongoing civil wars in countries such as Syria, many refugees sought asylum in European countries. Member states were pressured by the EU to admit a specific number of refugees. As a result, the UK's original citizens felt their influence was being eroded, as many of them believed that refugees would rob them of work prospects and create security concerns. This was a critical component in the Brexit decision. Citizens are given opportunities for political engagement in a democratic state, but when those opportunities and voices are ignored by the higher order of IGOs, citizens band together as a nation, emphasizing their identity as part of the nation, excluding refugees and the EU. The impact of this nationalism was the EU's shrinking size and strength, as well as the growth of nationalism in other key European countries such as France.
