The Movie Encanto and it¡¯s Portrayal of Generational Trauma
ÀÌÁöÀÌ °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2022.01.26 20:40

Encanto is an animation film released by disney and a film I was pleasantly surprised by. Before I start with my article I would like to inform the readers that this has major spoilers about the film and that I heavily recommend that you go and watch this film first. Thank you.

Generational trauma is trauma that extends from one generation to the next. The phrase “breaking the cycle” means that they would break the harmful cycle of abuse. They would be ensuring that the following generation would not feel the same pain as the previous did. Like Abuela in the film, her trauma from the Colombian Civil war led to her obsession with the gifts. In fear that by losing the gifts the horrors of war would come back to haunt her, she makes the mistake of forming a harmful and abusive mindset that built a whole household.

I’d still like to state that even if you don’t have horrible events like the Colombian Civil war in your direct past that doesn’t mean you aren’t a product of generational trauma. Most of the time it is formed by subtle things that are enforced by tradition or religion.

Generational trauma can lead to general distrust, issues with self-esteem and confidence, and problems regulating emotion which are all themes that we can find in the film Encanto.

Let’s look at Luisa and Isabella. Both of them have expectations that they live up to. They take the burden on willingly even when those expectations wear them down. Their issues are personalized, Luisa being the one who thinks her worth is based on her strength and Isabella being the one who believes her worth is based on her “perfection”. Both, while seeming to reach the expectations set by Abuela, are being torn apart and has severe issues with self-esteem.

Mirabel realizes that the problem is the matriarch of the family, Abuela. She was the one who stacked all these unreasonable expectations on her family. This realization breaks the house apart. Abuela comes to talk to Mirabel in the end. She admits that this was her fault and promises to try her best to change.

The movie executes this scene well. It does not excuse Abuela’s actions because of her trauma, but instead gives her a second chance. A chance to change her ways. It is her willingness to change and grow that the family is able to work together, reignite the Casita, and bring back the miracle.
