The United States justified its atomic bombing of Japan by stating that it saved more Americans' lives by ending World War II. However, it was discovered immediately after Japan's surrender that the US had been pressuring the Soviet Union to declare war on Japan, which they did on August 8, 1945. 

 

The Soviet proclamation on the horizon was bound to frighten Japan; at the time, the Japanese government was suppressing communist movements (The Red Scare) as a result of their signing of the Anti-Comintern Pact with Germany and Italy. As a result, the US did not have to rush into implementing their A-bombing strategy because Japan's surrender and the end of WWII were just a matter of time. Furthermore, even without the use of atomic bombs or invasion, Japan's capitulation was a distinct possibility due to severe supply shortages.

 

The main reason for the rush is that the US needed to scare and prevent the Soviet Union from expanding its authority over Asia, especially Japan, to proclaim the shape of the postwar world. By the end of the war, it was evident that the Soviets would fill the power void left by a shattered Germany. 

 

As a result, intimidation, particularly in the context of nuclear weapons, became a crucial and effective tool for constraining Soviet expansion, known as "Nuclear deterrence/Atomic diplomacy." Since the start of the Cold War, this has been a key component of American security policy.

 

 

 

 

미국인들은 일본에 대한 원자폭탄 투하가 2차 세계대전을 종식시킴으로써 더 많은 미국인들의 죽음을 막았다고 주장함으로써 그들의 행위를 정당화하고 있다. 그러나 일본이 항복한 직후 미국은 소련에 1945년 8월 8일 실제로 일본에 선전포고를 하도록 부추겼다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 

 

소련의 수평선 선언이 일본을 공포에 떨게 할 것이 분명했는데, 당시 일본 정부는 독일, 이탈리아와 함께 코민테른 방지 조약을 맺었기 때문에 공산주의 운동을 탄압했다. 따라서 일본이 항복하고 2차 세계대전이 종결되는 것은 시간 문제이기 때문에 미국은 원자폭탄 계획을 서둘러 실행에 옮길 필요가 없었다. 게다가 원폭 투하나 침략을 하지 않더라도 심각한 보급 부족으로 일본이 항복할 가능성이 높았다.

 

미국이 전후 세계의 모습을 발표하기 위해서는 소련이 일본을 포함한 아시아에 대한 지배권을 확대하지 못하도록 위협하고 막아야 했다는 것이 가장 큰 이유다. 전쟁이 끝날 때쯤 소련이 희생된 독일이 남긴 힘의 공백을 메울 것이 분명했다. 

 

따라서 위협은, 특히 핵무기의 치명적인 표시와 관련된, 소위 "핵 억지/원자 외교"라고 불리는 소련의 확장을 제한하는 중요하고 효과적인 전략이 되었다. 이것은 냉전이 시작된 이래로 미국 안보 정책의 중심 요소였다.
