In September last year, Starbucks held an event to present a reusable cup (multi-use cup) to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The goal was to reduce environmental pollution by using a lot of recycled cups, but Starbucks was criticized for consuming a huge amount of plastic as a huge crowd gathered.

These are the examples of "greenwashing" in which companies benefit from activities that promote products or services as if they were eco-friendly. The term was coined in 1986 by environmental activist Jay Westerveld and was already listed in the Cambridge dictionary with the definition of "behavior or activities that make people believe that a company is doing more to protect the environment than it is."

However, with the recent rise of eco-friendly green marketing and ESG corporate efforts, such an ancient concept has resurfaced. There are many corporations avidly advertising their eco-friendly products as customer interest in the environment grow and is closely connected to corporate earnings, yet examples, where this is not the case, have been observed. Furthermore, even if a corporation states that it would minimize carbon emissions, it may not be adequately accomplished due to a lack of technology to do so.

According to Reuters in January 2022, more than 450 scientists sent letters to advertising giants WPP, Edelman, and IPG, which have Unilever, Amazon, and Microsoft as their customers, saying, "Stop providing inaccurate information about the climate crisis." They warned that greenwashing advertisements were reducing or misrecognizing the risk of the climate crisis.

Nowadays when the phrases "Green," "Eco-friendly," and "ESG" overflow, everyone seems to be leading the climate crisis, but in reality, there are companies that cover up accurate facts or benefit from exaggerated advertising. At the government level, regulations on greenwashing need to be tightened, and consumers also need to request accurate information.

그린이 아닌 그린워싱

작년 9월, 스타벅스는 50주년을 기념해 리유저블 컵(다회용 컵)을 증정하는 행사를 했다. 재활용컵을 많이 쓰게 해 환경 오염을 줄이겠다는 목적이었으나 스타벅스에 엄청난 인파가 몰리면서 오히려 엄청난 양의 플라스틱이 소비되었다는 비판을 받았다.

이렇게 기업이 상품이나 서비스가 친환경적인 것처럼 홍보하는 활동으로 경제적 이익을 보는 것을 ‘그린워싱’이라고 한다. 이 용어는 1986년 환경 운동가 제이 웨스터벨트가 기업의 가짜 친환경 홍보를 비판하며 처음 명명한 것으로 신조어같이 보이지만 이미 캠브리지 사전에 ‘사람들로 하여금 기업이 실제로 하는 것보다 더 많은 환경 보호 활동을 한다고 믿게 만드는 행동’이라는 뜻을 가지고 등재된 오래된 단어이다.

그러나 이렇게 오래된 단어가 친환경 그린 마케팅, ESG 기업 캠페인의 물결과 함께 최근 다시 주목을 받고 있다. 환경에 대한 소비자의 관심이 높아지고, 기업의 수익에 직접 연결이 되면서 친환경적인 제품이라고 홍보하지만 실제와 다른 사례들이 보고되고 있다. 또한 탄소 배출을 줄이겠다고 선포하지만 그것을 이루기 위한 기술력이 부족해 제대로 이루어지지 않는 경우도 있다.

로이터 통신에 따르면 2022년 1월, 450명이 넘는 과학자들이 유니레버, 아마존, 마이크로소프트를 고객으로 둔 거대 광고 회사 WPP, 에델만(Edelman), IPG에 “기후위기에 대한 부정확한 정보 제공을 중단하라”는 서한을 보냈다. 이들은 그린워싱 광고가 기후위기의 위험을 축소하거나 잘못된 인식을 주고 있음을 경고했다.

“그린”, “친환경”, “ESG” 라는 문구가 넘쳐나는 이 시기에 모두가 기후 위기에 앞장서는 듯이 보이지만 실제로는 정확한 사실을 은폐하거나 과장 광고를 통해 이익을 챙기는 기업들이 존재한다. 정부 차원에서도 그린워싱에 대한 규제를 강화하고 소비자들 또한 정확한 정보를 요청할 필요가 있다.
