The Half Disorder

Hemispatial neglect, also known as unilateral neglect, is a condition in which a person loses awareness of one side of their body and one side of the world, impacting their senses and motor cognition. Patients with damage to the right hemisphere of the brain have shown neglect on the left side, demonstrating that damage to one side of the brain causes a lack of awareness on the other.

Hemispatial neglect can be caused by a variety of clinical conditions, but cerebral infarctions and hemorrhagic strokes are the most common. This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain or on its surface ruptures, allowing blood to flow into the brain. Because brain tissue cannot live in a pool of blood, the neurons surrounding are severely harmed, resulting in their impairment or death.

New behavioral studies in patients with neglect have revealed several intriguing symptoms, such as an inability to recognize the existence of things on their affected side.

Patients who are placed on their neglected side are more likely to be ignorant of large items, including people, in more severe situations. Patients frequently eat from only one side of a plate, shave their faces from only one side, and sketch on only one side of a page. Common experiment doctors undertake on neglected patients is to have them design a clock on a sheet of paper with numbers on it. In many cases, the patient would draw a whole circle but would cram all of the hours from 1 to 12 onto one side of the page, leaving half of the circle blank.

Most stroke victims who have been neglected improve after a few weeks, but some have a lasting lack of awareness; doctors highly advise these people to seek rehabilitation. Though numerous techniques have been used to improve the symptoms of hemispatial neglect, such as rehabilitation and physiotherapy, no cure has been discovered.
