The Interstellar Journey

Although many people may not believe in the existence of aliens, there could be various benefits of finding life outside of Earth. The possibility of finding extraterrestrial life could expand human knowledge about the universe.

NASA has come up with a solution to get us one step closer to fully understanding what lies beyond our solar system. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was designed by NASA and the Space Agencies of Canada and Europe. The telescope takes its name from the man who ran NASA from February 1961 to October 1968. He may not have been a scientist at the space agency, but he contributed to science more than any other government official.

The JWST cost a fortune to make, nearly 10 billion dollars. Although lots of money has been spent to make this device, the results are worth its value. This telescope is capable of seeing 13.7 billion light-years into the galaxy, which is 100 times stronger than its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope. Unlike the Hubble Telescope, which uses mirrors to reflect the light from near celestial objects, the JWST uses infrared radiation to detect objects located in space. This special type of radiation allows the telescope to see exceedingly far and allows the scope to detect stars, nebulae, and planets that are invisible to the human eye.

Its main purpose is to study different kinds of atmospheres. The wavelength coverage of the JWST is well-tuned, so it can be used to study different molecules in an exoplanet’s atmosphere, which has more advantages compared to other telescopes that NASA has used throughout its history. This can help unveil whether a planet is suitable for life. With this new technology, NASA may be able to possibly confirm if aliens do truly exist outside our solar system.
