Tuskegee Syphilis study is one of the most unethical studies in American history. The study was conducted by the United States Public Health Service to observe the reaction of syphilis without treatment. I would introduce the two main ethical concerns in this study.
First, the researcher did not tell the procedure and risk of the experiment to the participants. When we conduct the study, researchers should talk about how the test works, how it could harm people, and what the researchers will do to participants. In the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the researcher did not talk the detailed procedure to participants. Moreover, researchers did not give them a chance to withdraw from the experiment when their health got worse. Therefore, more than 100 people died from this study.
Second, the researcher should explain the study to participants and explain the uncertainty clearly and understandably. The researcher, on the other hand, only told them that they would provide proper syphilis therapy, although they were providing fake medications that could harm important organs and nervous systems. The lack of information and non-comprehensible manner of delivering information limited their ability to choose the right decision to withdraw experiment.
Aside from these two major issues, the study has several other serious flaws. They knew penicillin was a suitable medication in the middle of the study, but they continued the research without alerting the participants. The fact that the study was exclusively conducted on African Americans was the most troubling aspect. Limiting a participant's participation based on their color for no reason is racist and should not be done. Following this experiment, researchers created the study ethics standard and stressed the need of adhering to the ethical standards.
