Increasing Physical Activity in ChildrenReplacing Screen Time to Physical Activity

As we all know, it is critical to provide and encourage children to engage in daily physical activity. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “children and adolescents age 6 through 17 years should do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.” However, many research studies found that not many children reach the time recommendation of physical activity.

Recently, screen time has taken the place of scheduled and unstructured play. This reduces physical activity directly, and it may also diminish physical activity indirectly by impeding the development of motor skills and physical literacy. This problem has probably gotten worse in recent years as a result of the ubiquitous availability of screen time. Previously, television viewing was restricted to a single television set at home. Today's kids can watch shows on a number of fixed and mobile devices, and many of them are available 24 hours a day.

For the solution, it is clear to reduce the current screen-time by replacing it with physical activity. It is vital to educate parents and guardians about the appropriate amount of screen time and physical activity, but their ability to regulate this is restricted. The study provides that considering the accessibility of high-quality care from school when it comes to physical activity and the education environment where the teachers and staff could be counseled by professional pediatricians about the screen time and physical activity policies are important for the children’s physical well-being. In addition, accessibility to safe outdoor spaces such as parks and playgrounds nearby school is essential for the successful improvement of increasing physical activity time of children.
