Reducing Food Waste through Foodbank

It is already being discussed as a social problem that online education during the COVID-19 era widens the educational gap according to the family background. Also, COVID-19 is causing a more basic and fatal problem, which is the problem of children who were able to eat quality meals at school, are now starving or filling up on junk food.

While starving children or hunger are global problems, the World Food Organization estimates that more than 30 percent of the world's food products are wasted every year. A little old and ugly food is always thrown away for shelves in department stores and marts full of pretty and fresh food. Food banks are a system for a virtuous cycle of food ingredients that are thrown away because they are ugly but can be valuable food for those who are starving.

Food banks, which first appeared in the United States in 1967, first appeared in Korea in the late 1990s, when the financial crisis exacerbated the problem of hungry children, and now operate in over 600 locations around the country. Stronger government legislation is required to resuscitate food banks. France has passed legislation requiring supermarket owners with a footprint of 400 square meters or larger to sign donation contracts with charity or risk a fine of €3,750. Furthermore, insurance or legal safeguards must be established for organizations that are hesitant to give owing to liability concerns if donated food items degrade.

Other sorts of channels are required for individuals who wish to obtain food ingredients at a reduced cost, in addition to the food bank, which provides partial access to low-income households. For example, Copenhagen's stock store, We food, can be a suitable model because it offers free stock food at marts and sells it inexpensively. In Korea, Uglyus Market is gaining traction after launching a regular subscription service for ugly veggies in 2020 and extending its operations.
We've been brainstorming methods to cut down on food waste at home and in restaurants. It's past time to focus on food waste generated during the production and distribution stages rather than during consumption.
