Imagine a country engulfed in ashes, with desperate families crying in terror as weapons firing and bodies strewn around. Bombs detonate in buildings, smoke billows from every direction, and tanks trample civilians. Does this seem familiar?

There have been several conflicts in the past, but when was the last time a significant war was fought to claim the lands of other countries? It's 2022, and in the twenty-first century, a complete country is attacking another country to claim more land, and a horrific genocide is taking place.

There have been numerous conflicts throughout history, both essential and needless. The invasion of Ukraine was unwarranted, and it was followed by the murder of innocent Ukrainian residents who had done nothing wrong.

According to BBC News, Russian President Vladimir Putin's main purpose for the invasion was to "overrun Ukraine and topple its government, thereby putting a stop to Ukraine's aspirations to join the Western defense alliance NATO." However, after failing to seize Kyiv, Putin switched his attention to Ukraine's east and south, reigniting his desire for Ukrainian territory. Furthermore, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the invasion, or "special military operation," is intended to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine. The leader's remarks, however, contradict one another; they declare that their purpose is not to seize any Ukrainian land, even though several places have been conquered or are actively being invaded.

According to the conversation, 15,000 people were slaughtered in the assault. While retreating the army, Russian forces failed to seize Kyiv, resulting in a huge atrocity against innocent citizens. Despite this atrocity, Russia's hunger for blood appears to be unquenchable since the murder in Ukrainian territory continues unabated.

The relevance of this conflict in the twenty-first century is that it demonstrates how terrible and brutal war can be. Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims that this invasion will help build a stronger Ukraine, it will only cost the lives of young troops and citizens who had no part in it. Russia's previous leader has devolved into an unstoppable monster, and no country needs a monster as its leader. Simultaneously, the wise must consider how to put an end to the monster's age.

우리 모두 상상을 해보자. 이 지구상에는 많은 나라들이 있고, 제각각 그들만의 특성들이 있다. 지금 이름없는 아름다운 나라를 생각하고 있다면 잘 생각하고 있다. 이제 이 나라에 몇가지 특징들을 추가해보자. 어느새 보니 그 나라는 재로 뒤집혀져 있을 것이고, 가족들은 살기 위해 발버둥 치고 있을 것이며, 비명은 난무할 것이고, 시체들이 널려 있을 것이다. 건물들은 무너지고, 연기는 끝없이 피어 오르고 있으며, 탱크들은 시민들을 깔아 뭉게고 있다. 혹시 지금 이런 나라, 낯이 익지 않은가?

역사적으로 많은 전쟁들이 있어 왔는데, 최근 들어 어느 나라의 영토를 빼앗기 위한 전쟁이 있었는가? 심지어 지금은 2022년이다. 무려 21세기 시대에, 영토 분쟁으로 인하여 나라를 침공하고 무고한 시민들을 학살하고 있다. 

전쟁은 언젠가는 일어난다. 그러나 이 전쟁은 크게 두 부류로 나뉘는데, 전쟁이 필요했거나 필요가 없었을 경우다. 오늘날 우크라이나 침공은 일어났으면 안되는 침공이자 전쟁이고, 결국 죄없는 시민들만 죽어 나가고 있다.

BBC 뉴스에 따르면, 푸틴 러시아 대통령의 목표는 우크라이나를 침공하여 우크라이나를 크게 혼란스럽게 만듦으로써 우크라이나의 나토 가입을 좌절시키는 것이다. 그러나, 러시아는 우크라이나의 수도인 키이우 점령에 실패하여 결국 우크라이나의 동쪽과 남쪽 지역으로 본격적인 영토 분쟁을 시작했다. 추가로, 푸틴은 이 침공, 아니 이 '특별 군사 작전'은 우크라이나의 나치 세력들을 없앨 수 있을 것이며, 그 군대의 힘을 뺄 수 있을 것이라 하였다. 하지만 결과적으로 보았을 때, 푸틴의 모든 말은 서로 상충한다. 푸틴은 우크라이나 영토를 빼앗는 것을 원치 않는다 했으나, 이미 많은 우크라이나 동남부 지역은 러시아 군대가 장악했다. 

TheConversation에 따르면, 현재 무려 1만5000명 정도의 민간인 사상자가 발생했다. 그리고, 잔혹한 러시아군은 키이우에서 후퇴함과 동시에, 키이우 근방의 여러 도시에서 수많은 우크라이나 민간인을 학살한 정황이 보고 되고 있다. 그럼에도 러시아는 피에 목이 마른것일까, 아직도 그들은 살육을 끊지 않고 있다. 

이 참혹한 21세기의 전쟁이 우리에게 시사하는 바가 크고 단순하다. 전쟁은 살육이 넘친다. 아무리 푸틴이 이 전쟁이 우크라이나 시민들을 위한 것이라 말해도, 결과는 젊은 병사들과 죄없는 시민들의 죽음이다. 얼마나 잔인한 일인가? 한때 러시아의 대통령이었던 푸틴은 이제는 돌이킬 수 없는 괴물이 되어 버린 것이 아닐까. 괴물이 되어버린 대통령은 그 누구도 필요가 없을 것이다. 즉, 이 괴물의 시대를 끝내기 위해, 현명한 자들이 머리를 맞대야 할 시간이다.
