In April, BBC reported that David Malpass, the president of the World Bank, asserted that the world is in a state of disaster due to the food crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In addition, he said the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war will worsen the food shortage. For this reason, he predicted that food prices would soar 37% this year due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
As with oil, Ukraine is one of the world's largest wheat exporters. Indeed, Ukraine and Russia account for a high proportion of grain trade and are thus called "The world's grain warehouses". According to a report released by the United Nations Trade and Development Council (UNCTAD) in March, Russia and Ukraine accounted for 53% of the world's grain trade in sunflower oil and seeds, 27% in wheat, 23 % in barley, and 14 % of corn as of 2020. The problem is that Russia and Ukraine are banning grain exports since the war has been prolonged. Ukraine began to ban grain exports for its food supply, and Russia blocked the Black Sea port of Ukraine, making transport virtually impossible.
David Beasley, the Executive Director for the UN WFP(World Food Programme), appealed to Russian President Putin to reopen Ukraine's Black Sea port before a global disaster occurs, insisting that millions of people will be dead if it is blocked. He stressed that Ukraine's agriculture-based economy might collapse if the port doesn't resume operation within 60 days. He also added that this situation would have a worse impact on certain African countries which are heavily dependent on Ukrainian wheat.
Currently, we are indirectly exposed to the Russia-Ukraine war through the media. Many people fight for Ukraine and stand for it, but some people think this circumstance is irrelevant to them. Food shortage can also seem far from us, yet it will soon have a negative impact globally. We should consider Ukraine as our country and go to extreme lengths to stop this meaningless war as quickly as possible.
