DNA Storage and it¡¯s Future

Microsoft started a noteworthy initiative in 2015 that has the potential to increase the amount of storage that is currently offered. This study contributes to the development of long-lasting storage that makes use of DNA molecules. This can take the place of present storage by increasing its capacity and lengthening the duration because it is durable.
 
To quickly introduce this subject, DNA storage is the method of encoding and storing binary data using the four nucleotide bases Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine. Conventional digital storage employs 0s and 1s to encode its information, but DNA storage uses the 4 nucleotide bases to do the same. This is the difference between normal digital storage systems and DNA storage systems. The size of the storage might also be different. The quantity of data that can be stored in DNA storage is at least twice as much as that in digital storage, which only needs a small, microscopic molecule. Digital storage requires massive hardware devices to hold compact data.
 
The fact that DNA storage is significantly safer than conventional digital storage is one of its many advantages. Scientists asserted that DNA storage is extremely safe and does not require routine maintenance inspections. Additionally, according to research, it can preserve its information without a power source, which can minimize the amount of energy and electricity used while also reducing global warming. While digital data is often saved between 12 and 33 degrees Celsius, DNA may be preserved at 4 degrees, which is far more advantageous.
 
Overall, the project is evolving and growing, which is very advantageous for the future of storage. Microsoft and scientists believe that this is a significant step that might advance society and help the field of biotechnology in the future, even though it is costly and time-consuming.
