The art market has become younger, with the increasing proportion of millennial customers, 30s and 40s, and the works of 21st-century artists breaking the highest auction price. 

On 13th Jul y, Christie’s, the largest auction house in the world, reported that its sales in the first half of 2022 were $4.1 billion, up 18% from the result of $3.5 billion in the same period last year, and recorded the best performance in the past seven years.

30 percent of Christie’s buyers in the first half were new customers, which was up 1 percentage point from the same period last year. The proportion of millennials (the younger generation born between 1981 and 1996) among new customers was 34%. It increased 3 percentage points from 31% in the first half period of last year.

Young artists are making new records for auction. A total of 10 artists under the age of 40 set a record for the highest auction.

The market is getting bigger. Before Covid-19, around 10,000 to 15,000 clients would watch the firm’s auctions online, but the number of viewers has jumped to between 800,000 and 1.2m people after the pandemic.

As people’s attention to art is increasing, new moves and breath would be in the art market. The prospects of the art market are positive.

미술 시장에서 30대와 40대 밀레니얼 세대 고객 비중이 늘어나면서 미술계가 젊어지고 있다. 경매에서는 21세기 예술가들의 작품이 최고가를 경신했다.

7월 13일 밝혀진 세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 경매인 크리스티 경매의 2022년 상반기 판매총액은 41억 달러(한화 약 5조 1천억 원)로 최근 7년 중 최고 실적을 기록했다. 이는 작년 동시기 판매총액인 35억 달러에서 18% 증가한 수치이다.

이번 크리스티 경매 참여 고객의 30%는 신규 고객층으로, 작년 대비 1퍼센트 포인트 증가한 수치이다. 신규 고객 중 밀레니얼 세대(1981년에서 1996년 사이 태어난 인구)의 비율은 34%이다. 이는 작년 상반기의 수치인 31%에서 3퍼센트 포인트 증가한 수치이다.

젊은 예술가들도 이번 경매에서 신기록을 세우고 있다. 총 10명의 만 40세 이하의 예술가들이 경매 최고 거래가 기록을 갱신하였다.

미술 시장의 규모도 커지고 있다. 코로나-19 사태 이전에는 대략 10,000명에서 15,000명의 고객들이 미술품 경매를 시청했지만, 코로나 팬데믹 이후로는 800,000명에서 1,200,000명 상당으로 증가했다.

미술 시장에 대한 사람들의 관심이 커지는 만큼 새로운 움직임과 변화가 기대된다. 앞으로 미술 시장의 미래는 긍정적일 것으로 보인다.
