Box Gallery, a student-run project within the online student extracurricular platform Youth Impact, held its first exhibition in Eve Gallery in Gangnam from July 2 - 10. The exhibition showcased 24 paintings on the theme of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) drawn by 17 student artists from Japan, Korea, Singapore, and the United States. “The goal of the exhibition is to raise public awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals and the Box Gallery project, which is a project dedicated to addressing the elderly poverty rate in Korea through art,” said Yeonjun Lim, who is the project leader of the Box Gallery project.

One of the world's populations that are aging the quickest is South Korea. 7.2% of South Korea's population was 65 years of age or older in 2000. The percentage doubled to 14.4% in 2018. The percentage is anticipated to rise to 20.3 percent by 2025, which is higher than the 20 percent threshold that the United Nations designates as a "super-aged society." In addition, as society ages, it also becomes poorer. 2020 will see the highest senior poverty rate among OECD members, at 40.4 percent in South Korea.

As a result, it is no surprise that more than 1.75 million seniors collect waste paper on the streets for a living. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare by the Korea Human Resources Development institute for the Elderly, about one in a hundred senior citizens in South Korea collect waste paper for economic reasons. The average monthly income from collecting waste paper is between 100,000 - 200,000 Won ($75 - 150), which is less than 10% of the national minimum wage.

Members of the Box Gallery initiative buy discarded cardboard boxes from seniors who collect them for a living at three times the market rate to give them much-needed financial support. Students from all around the world get DIY canvas kits made from recycled cardboard boxes.

The paintings will be utilized to make and publish a coloring book after the show, which will enable them and the words they express to reach a larger audience.

박스 갤러리 프로젝트의 첫번째 전시회
유스임팩트 프로젝트

온라인 학생 과외 플랫폼 유스 임팩트 내 학생이 운영하는 프로젝트인 박스 갤러리가 7월 2일부터 10일까지 강남 이브 갤러리에서 첫 전시회를 열었다. 

이 전시회에서는 일본, 한국, 싱가포르, 미국의 학생 화가 17명이 유엔 지속가능발전목표(SDG)를 주제로 그림 24점을 선보였다. 박스갤러리 프로젝트의 리더인 임연준 학생은 "지속가능발전목표 (SDG) 중 하나인 노인 빈곤 문제가 예술을 통하여 해소될 수 있으면 좋겠다"며, "전담 프로젝트인 박스갤러리 프로젝트에 대한 대중의 인식을 높이는 것이 전시의 메인 목표"라고 말했다.

한국은 세계에서 고령화가 가장 빠른 나라 중 하나이다. 2000년에 한국 인구의 7.2%가 65세 이상이었다. 2018년이 되어서는, 14.4%로 두 배가 되었다. 2025년이면 20.3%에 이를 것으로 예상돼 유엔이 '초고령사회'로 분류하는 20% 선을 넘어설 것으로 보인다. 또한 사람들이 나이가 들면서, 점점 더 가난해지고 있다. 한국의 2020년 노인 빈곤율은 40.4%로 경제협력개발기구(OECD)에 있는 나라들 중 제일 많은 국가 중 하나이다. 

결과적으로, 점점 초고령사회로 가까워져가는 요즘, 175만 명이 넘는 노인들이 생계를 위해 거리에서 폐지를 모으는 것은 놀라운 일이 아니다. 한국노인인력개발원의 보건복지부에 따르면, 한국의 노인 100명 중 약 1명은 경제적인 이유로 폐지를 모은다. 폐지를 모아 얻게 되는 월평균 소득은 10만~20만원(75~150달러)으로 전국 최저임금의 10%에도 미치지 못한다.

박스갤러리 프로젝트 회원들은 중고 골판지 상자를 생계를 위해 수집하는 어르신들에게 시중가의 3배에 달하는 가격으로 구입해 필요한 경제적 지원을 제공한다. 골판지 상자는 업사이클링되어 전 세계의 학생들에게 우편으로 발송되는 DIY 캔버스 키트를 만든다. 

전시가 끝난 후, 이 그림들은 색칠 책을 만들고 출판하는 데 사용될 예정이어서, 그림과 전시회의 메시지가 더 많은 관객들에게 전달되는 데 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.
