As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spread fast worldwide since 2019, many individuals are being more aware of respiratory diseases that can lead to dreadful results. Most people understand COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that has symptoms such as a sore throat. However, at the same time, most people do not know how they are infected by the virus. 

The most common reason why people are infected by COVID-19 is due to a vigorous inflammatory response. This excessive inflammatory response in the respiratory system causes an event known as the cytokine storm. This syndrome is directly correlated with various respiratory diseases, especially lung injuries, which can aggravate COVID-19 symptoms. As COVID-19 is also a respiratory disease, it can trigger a cytokine storm in several tissues through the uncontrolled release of cytokines.

Controlling cytokine storm is vital especially for COVID-19 patients as it can worsen the symptoms and lead to a dreadful result. Cytokine storm can be shown in COVID-19 patients in various ways; it can be shown in mild forms such as fever and cough, but also critical forms such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). As it is essential to recognize cytokines involved in COVID-19, people named COVID-19-related CS (COVID-CS) to increase the precision of diagnosis and develop an effective treatment. 

However, the development of a therapeutic intervention for COVID-CS is still progressing. Since detailed guidelines for treatment strategy are lacking, more research on inflammatory cytokines and immunoregulatory systems is needed to develop the therapeutic intervention for controlling COVID-CS. I hope more people will be aware of cytokine storms as much as COVID-19 and the therapeutic intervention for COVID-19 to be invented for public health.
