On August 8, 2022, South Korea experienced the highest rainfall in 80 years. South Korea experienced heavy rain for almost a week with dark clouds and thunderous storms. 

The rain also made South Korea’s summer even more humid and unbearable. The torrential downpour caused many parts of Seoul to be overflown with water. At least 11 people have died, and 11 people were severely injured. Also, over 2000 buildings were ruined. Since many of the buildings were damaged, over 100 people in Seoul evacuated their apartments and were forced to live out in the streets; some even took refuge in parks. 

The flood severely damaged the electricity in buildings and other electrically powered structures, which shut off their power. The flood was so large that it started to cover large roads in Gangnam and Han River Park, causing water to be at adult thigh level and almost submerging cars. Drivers had to evacuate their vehicles after turning them off due to the flood reaching the height of the car doors. Nowadays, people in South Korea pass by vehicles placed in the weirdest spaces and positions in the street. 

Fortunately, this overflowing crisis is currently being overcome. The president, Yoon Suk-Yeol, is working with the South Korean government to rebuild basement apartments into an improved shelter for the displaced citizens in South Korea. After seeing the basements and semi-basements destroyed by the floods, the South city government declared that in the future, basements and semi-basements would not be allowed to be used as residential purposes. To recover Seoul, the government did not only try to solve the flood crisis in Seoul, but many celebrities also volunteered and donated money to associations and communities.
