The United States Supreme Court formally voted to repeal the abortion legislation in June of last year. As a result, Roe v. Wade was overturned in 49 years, sparking a massive debate across the country. A continuous argument has arisen between pro-life, who oppose abortion, and pro-choice, who support abortion. Because the precedent was a significant decision under the 14th Amendment, which gives all individuals equal treatment under the law, it substantially accepted women's right to self-determination in abortion. Abortion is now illegal in at least ten states, and gestational limitations are in place in at least five more.
A large number of people today are concerned with women in the middle class and young women who are economically disadvantaged. As the prevalence of illegal methods is inevitable, it will cause more medical accidents and infringe on woman’s human rights. Moreover, according to Duke University Press, a 21% increase in pregnancy-related deaths is estimated with the abortion restriction, indicating that abortion bans are life-threatening to vulnerable groups of women.
After the Supreme Court’s decision, many corporations announced to reimburse abortion traveling costs for their employees. Amazon was one of the first companies to have the coverage; they reported paying up to $4000 in travel expenses and covering long-term health issues. Also, Apple employees are provided out-of-state travel and medical care.
Women should receive support as they have the right not to carry unintended pregnancies. It is everyone’s job to ensure women have healthcare without financial issues.
