Why is the world starving? Hunger is a phenomenon that leads to death due to hunger caused by a long-lasting shortage of food. Hunger is a terrifying phenomenon that destroys in 2020, which has hit poor countries hard. This hunger problem fundamentally reduces productivity due to malnutrition and hunger but also hinders the improvement of living standards. In 2020, the Global Hunger Index reached 6990 million due to COVID-19 (World Hunger Index). 

To reach the goal of Zero Hunger, the UN founded the ‘World Food Program’ in 1963. WFP is the institution that responds to food emergencies and runs worldwide programs to get rid of hunger. Among many programs, there is a program called ‘Food Assistance. When people can’t get food from the local market, WFP helps them to purchase fresh and locally grown food by using vouchers and e-cards. Families suffering from hunger will receive a card with a charge of 27 USD per person per month. The WFP predicts that by the end of the year about 800,000 refugees will these e-cards. 

Despite the efforts of various agencies and programs, the aftermath of climate change and COVID-19 caused 130 million people to inflict serious damage, resulting in a total of about 810 million people (based on the United Nations Food on Drug Administration).

The Global Food Crisis Report noted that the scale and seriousness of the food crisis increased in 2020 and that the outlook for 2021 was bleak. According to the current General Health Index Forecast, the goal of reducing the level of hunger to “low” globally by 2030 will fail, and the failure will be particularly pronounced in 47 countries.

Although the hunger problem has become more serious than before due to COVID-19, if individuals, businesses, countries, and the world work together, we will be able to overcome this problem well.
