Climate Refugees and Inequality

Korea saw its most rainfall on August 8 and 9, 2022, in 100 years. People witnessed the force of nature up close as casualties happened in Seoul's downtown. The issue is that because of a man-made climate catastrophe, these natural disasters are happening more often across the world.

"Climate refugees" are being produced by the climate problem. Both terms are frequently used to refer to people who are migrating within a nation or across borders because of natural disasters or climate change, such as earthquakes, floods, or droughts, even though it is argued that the term "climate refugees" should be replaced by the term "climate migrants" since it is not mandated.

Since the Earth's creation, there have been countless instances of climate change, but the most recent one is a result of global warming. Human activity produces greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, causing glaciers and permanent snow to melt, which raises sea levels, causes drought, and leads to desertification.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that throughout the ten years between 2008 and 2019, the number of forced displacements brought on by climate change averaged 21.5 million per year, more than double that brought on by armed conflict. According to the UNHCR, the effects of climate change might cause more than 200 million people to flee their homes by the year 2050.

Surprisingly, the top five countries with the largest number of refugees due to disasters are Afghanistan, India, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and Sudan. Developed countries with less than 20 percent of the world’s population emit about 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, but developing countries are suffering more because of climate change.

In addition, even within a country, socio-economic minority groups such as the poor, women, children, disabled, elderly, and minorities are relatively severely damaged because they have a lower ability to cope with a dangerous situations or escape from dangerous areas. This inequality is opening discussions on human rights issues, and the human rights issues caused by climate change should be discussed thoroughly.
