The killing of Mahsa Amini on September 16th sparked widespread outrage in Iran. She died after being detained by the morality police for wearing an "inappropriate hijab," according to the authorities.

Previous marches advocating women's rights were mostly attended by female college students. However, a broad cross-section of the people is also taking part in and supporting the demonstration. The schoolgirls demonstrated on the main thoroughfare, chanting "death to the tyrant." Not only are women demonstrating, but so are males. Men in Iran show their support for women by wearing hijabs.

After social media assisted in spreading the story of Mahsa Amini, the Iranian authorities imposed strict limitations on the use of the internet and social media. The authorities prohibited social media and internet services to prevent demonstrations from spreading further. Following the rule, just a few videos have been shared on social media.

After a month, another adolescent girl, Sarina Esmaeilzadeh, who was actively participating in the protest by posting on social media, was assassinated. The Iranian government is denying culpability for Esmaelizadeh's death, claiming she perished after falling off a lofty structure. Esmaelizadeh's family is skeptical of the authorities.

Over 200 people have been slain, according to international human rights organizations, since the demonstration began last September. At least 19 of them were youngsters, according to Iran Human Rights, and the Committee to Protect Journalists said that the Iranian government had jailed at least 35 journalists since the demonstration began.

마흐사 아미니의 사망

이란의 전국적인 시위는 9월 16일 마흐사 아미니의 죽음 이후로 시작되었다. 아미니는 경찰이 '부적절한 히잡'이라고 여긴 것을 착용한 혐의로 도덕 경찰에게 체포된 후 사망했다.

역사적으로 이란 내 여성 인권을 위한 시위는 주로 여대생들이 참여했다. 하지만, 이번 시위에서는 광범위한 사람들이 참여하여 여성 인권을 지지하고 있다. 여학생들은 "독재자에게 죽음을"이라는 구호를 외치며 큰길에서 시위를 벌이고 있다. 남성들도 히잡을 함께 쓰며 여성들을 지지하고 있다.
이란 정부는 마흐사 아미니의 소식이 소셜미디어로 인해 전국에 퍼지는 것을 보고 인터넷과 소셜미디어 사용에 강력한 규제를 가하고 있다. 정부는 시위가 더 이상 확산되는 것을 막기 위해 소셜 미디어와 인터넷 플랫폼을 차단했다. 규제 이후 SNS에는 일부 영상만 올라오고 있다.

마흐사 아미니가 사망한 지 한 달 만에 SNS에 글을 올리며 시위에 적극 가담한 또 다른 10대 소녀 사리나 에스마일자데가 살해됐다. 이란 당국은 에스마엘리자데의 죽음에 대한 책임을 부인하고 있으며 그녀가 높은 건물에서 떨어져 사망했다고 주장하고 있다. 에스마엘리자데의 가족은 이 주장을 의심하고 있다.

국제인권단체들은 시위가 처음 시작된 지난 9월 이후 200명 이상이 사망한 것으로 추정하고 있다. 이란 인권 단체에 따르면 사망자 중 최소 19명은 어린이였으며 언론인보호위원회는 시위가 시작된 이후 이란 정부는 최소 35명의 언론인을 구금했다고 보도했다. 

이란 내 시민들뿐만 아니라 해외에서도 많은 사람들이 SNS를 통해 시위의 내용을 전달하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 지난 10월 8일 강남구 테헤란로에서는 이란인 120여명이 모여 “여성, 인권, 자유”라는 구호를 외치며 이란 내 시위자들을 지지했다.
