This year, various climate activist groups attacked multiple masterpieces demanding action on the climate crisis. The Austrian environmentalist group, The Last Generation of Austria, threw black paint on Gustav Klimt's "Death and Life". The British climate activists Just Stop Oil threw tomato soup over Van Gogh's "Sunflower" and glued themselves to the frame of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper." Although they succeeded in attracting the public's attention, they caused antipathy to the environmental movements.
These somehow drew attention to the art world dealing with the climate crisis. Art, born to represent nature, has already explored the relationship with nature. The 20th-century artworks of land art used natural materials such as wood, soil, stone, and water to create works harmonizing with the surrounding landscape. Recently, renewable energy arts have been made using sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar. In addition, upcycling arts are made with creativity creating artworks from trashed materials.
The amount of carbon emitted in artworks' production, transportation, installation, and preservation stages to prepare for art exhibitions or art fairs is enormous. Efforts for sustainability are becoming even more active in the distribution stage of artworks. The Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, exhibiting "Sustainable Art: Art and Environment" in May 2021, reduced carbon emissions by choosing sea transportation instead of air transportation, used soybean oil ink and eco-friendly paper for printing necessary for exhibition and minimized the use of paint and adhesives. In addition, the Leeum Museum of Art has installed lightweight wall panels as modular partitions, halved the waste, and replaced most of the lights in the exhibition hall with LEDs.
However, compared to other countries, the movement of the art world in response to the domestic climate crisis is still in its beginner stage. Although people agreed on the need for sustainability, economic and physical conditions for action still need to be prepared. Therefore, now is the moment when the art industry's creative efforts and the audiences' active participation are necessary for sustainability.
