On November 21, 2022, the 22nd World Cup will be held in Qatar. The first time Korea entered the tournament was in 2002, and then the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was the second time Korea reached a round of 16 or higher. It is true that Korea is evaluated as a weak team in soccer, so the goal in every World Cup was to advance to the round of 16, which mostly failed historically. But this World Cup is different. 돌아온 월드컵, 대한민국의 전망은?

2022년 11월 21일, 제22회 월드컵이 카타르에서 개최된다. 이는 2002년 한일 월드컵 이후 아시아에서 개최되는 두번째 월드컵으로 파울루 벤투 감독이 이끄는 대한민국은 좋은 성적으로 10년 연속 월드컵 본선 진출이라는 대기록을 세울 수 있게 되었다. 

월드컵은 세계축구연맹 FIFA의 주관 하에 4년에 한번씩 열리는 세계 축구 국가대항전이다. 대륙 별로 지역예선을 거친 후 32개국 만이 본선에 진출할 수 있으며 4국가씩 8개의 조로 예선을 펼친 후 토너먼트로 우승국을 가려내는 방식이다. 

현재까지 최다 우승국은 5번의 우승을 거머쥔 브라질이다. 반면 대한민국은 아직까지 우승 경험이 없으며 역대 최고 성적은 2002년 한일 월드컵에서 기록한 4위이다. 유럽과 남미의 축구 강호들 사이에서 만들어 낸 성적이라고 생각하면 감히 엄청난 결과라고 단언할 수 있다. 

대한민국은 2002년 처음으로 토너먼트에 진출한 이후 2010년 남아공 월드컵 때 원정에서 토너먼트에 진출하였으며 그 두번이 대한민국이 16강 이상의 성적을 거둔 유일한 월드컵 대회이다. 대한민국이 축구라는 종목에서는 약체 팀으로 평가되는 것이 사실이기 때문에 매 월드컵마다 우리의 목표는 16강 진출이었고 대부분은 실패했다. 

하지만 이번 대회는 얘기가 다르다. 먼저 한 명의 감독이 최장기간 대표팀을 이끌고 있기 때문에 선수들의 조직력이 뛰어나다는 평가이다. 그 외에도 토트넘에서 지난 시즌 득점왕에 오른 손흥민, 또다른 프리미어 리거 황희찬, A매치에서 항상 좋은 활약을 보인 황의조, 이탈리아 리그에서 엄청난 호평을 받으며 이 달의 선수상과 이 달의 mvp를 수상한 김민재, 올 시즌 단점을 완벽하게 보완하며 대표팀에 극적으로 합류한 마요르카의 이강인 등 수많은 해외파 선수들과 국내에서도 좋은 활약을 펼치고 있는 선수들의 조합은 역대급 호화 라인업으로 평가되고 있다. 

대한민국은 11월 24일 우루과이전을 시작으로 함께 H조에 속한 가나와 포르투갈과 순차적으로 경기를 치를 예정이다. 대표팀 모든 선수들이 부상없이 최선을 다해 좋은 성적을 거둘 수 있도록 전국민이 하나되어 다함께 응원해주었으면 좋겠다.
