Unstability in PeruImpeachment and Protest

After Peru's former President Pedro Castillo was impeached by parliament on December 7, Castillo's supporters initiated a protest against the parliament. Congress impeached the president for dissolving Congress and unconstitutionally obstructing Congress.

Mr. Castillo was a teacher from a poor peasant family. He also took a role as a labor activist, solidifying his support. His supporters are calling for an early election and claiming it wrong for Congress to impeach Castillo, who had been elected through a democratic measure.

Peru has been politically unstable for many decades.
Former President Martin Vizcarra was impeached after the prosecution investigated bribery charges on November 9, 2020. However, the citizens didn't want to impeach Vizcarra because he strove to rectify the corruption among the politicians. Vizcarra decided to convene a special session of parliament to discuss the dismissal of all members of the National Judiciary Committee, including his successors, to reform Peru's corrupted politics. More than half of the lawmakers were investigated on corruption charges. The citizens and the supporters of Vizcarra were angry at corrupt politicians and their anger intensified when the lawmakers impeached Vizcarra.

Since then, Manuel Merino, the speaker of the National Assembly, has been appointed as interim president, but Merino has not received much public support. Then, the citizens, especially the millennial generation, began protests condemning the parliament and the interim government. Conscious of this public opinion, Merino voluntarily resigned five days after his inauguration.
On November 17, a centrist politician Sagasti was elected as Speaker of the National Assembly and became interim president. In July 2021, Pedro Castillo was elected president.

Now, supporters of Castillo are intensifying the protest. Physical clashes continue and at least 20 people have been injured since the protest began. The protesters are posting on SNS with hashtags addressing the new president as a “usurper.”

Peru has been in a state of political instability in recent years, and it is necessary to pursue justice unitedly. Moreover, it is necessary for everyone, regardless of nationality, to be more aware of these international affairs now.
