With Argentina's victory, the World Cup is finally over. Although Kylian Mbappe made three goals in the final game, one of the greatest of all time football players, Lionel Messi, got the trophy through a penalty shootout. The Argentine people were enthusiastic about the World Cup coming home and hoped this happiness would be the driving force to reverse the severe economic crisis. Despite the dramatic final and Argentina's enthusiasm, public opinion of positive and negative coexists in this World Cup.
According to FIFA, the Federation International Football Association made 7.5 billion dollars through Qatar World Cup. It is more than $5.7 billion earned at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and more than $6.4 billion earned at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. They also predict that they will be able to make more financial gains in the next World Cup. People believe that FIFA's revenue generation will bring better convenience for the Football fans who are planning to visit the 2026 United World Cup. However, despite these positive points, there are three reasons why negative public opinion has arisen.
At first, the exploitation of labor and suppression of human rights. The Qatar government denies the allegations, while according to YTN news, the British Guardian criticizes Qatar's government for pushing migrant workers into harsh working conditions.
Second, Qatar's government forces its Islamic law on foreign people. Regardless of the religion of foreigners, they cannot eat pork and can only drink at the designated time. There are a lot of public opinions that these kinds of laws make it difficult for tourists to get along with each other.
The last reason is that the claim that this is the first carbon-neutral World Cup may be false. According to FIFA, this World Cup would be the first carbon-neutral sports event. According to YTN news, however, non-profit environmental group Carbon Market Watch claims Qatar's carbon emissions are eight times lower than they are.
The World Cup should be a happy event for everyone because it is one of the biggest sports festivals in the world. Therefore, we should enjoy this event and keep an eye on whether there are any problems with the World Cup preparation and progress.
