Self-storage for Single-person Household

The "self-storage" industry has recently expanded rapidly around the world. Self-storage is an abbreviation for "self-service storage," which refers to a service business that stores and manages people's belongings in facilities such as warehouses. Because self-storage is located in the city center, it is easily accessible. With the recent increase in single-person households and telecommuting due to COVID-19, an increasing number of families and businesses are looking for this type of self-storage.

In Europe, the United States, and Japan, self-storage is growing rapidly. Self-storage accounted for approximately 9.4% of all households in the United States in 2018, with total sales of approximately $39.5 billion. Furthermore, the global self-storage market is expected to grow to $51.32 billion in 2021 and $71.37 billion in 2027, according to Research & Markets. Self-storage is also on the rise in Korea. As of June, there were approximately 200 self-storage branches in operation in Korea, according to Jones Lang Lassal's Korean subsidiary.

Users are said to primarily store personal items such as camping equipment, sports equipment, clothing, and skiing equipment, despite the noticeable growth of the self-storage market due to the increase in single-person households. Users can also enter whenever they want. "General warehouses are used to store large amounts of goods for a long time," an industry official explained, "but self-storage also has the advantage of storing things that can be put in and taken out at any time, like a veranda in the house."

In Korea, single-person households are gradually increasing to account for more than 40% of the total household ratio (Ministry of Public Administration and Security). As a result, the self-storage market is expected to grow in the future as the volume of housing decreases but space for storing existing luggage becomes available. Above all, self-storage services are expected to be prominent in urban areas with high housing costs.
