Americans were justifying their acts of the atomic bombing on Japan by claiming that it prevented the death of more Americans by bringing an end to WW2. However, soon after Japan’s surrender, it was revealed that the US had been encouraging the Soviet Union to declare war on Japan which happened on August 8, 1945. It was evident that the Soviet’s declaration on the horizon would terrify Japan - back then, the Japanese government suppressed communist movements (The Red Scare) because they signed the Anti-Comintern Pact with Germany and Italy. 

 

Thus, the US did not necessarily have to rush on putting their A-bombing plan into action because it was only a matter of time before Japan surrendered and the close of WW2. Furthermore, even without the usage of atomic bombing or invasion, there was a high possibility that Japan might surrender due to a severe supply shortage. 

 

The principal reason that explains the rush is that for the US to announce the shape of the post-war world, they had to intimidate and prevent the Soviet Union from extending control over Asia including Japan. It was obvious by the end of the war that the Soviets will fill the power void left by a decimated Germany. 

 

So intimidation, especially where the fatal denotation of nuclear weapons was concerned, became an important and effective strategy for limiting Soviet expansion so-called “Nuclear deterrence/Atomic diplomacy”. This has been a central element of American security policy since the Cold War began.

따라서 일본이 항복하고 2차 세계대전이 종결되는 것은 시간 문제이기 때문에 미국은 원자폭탄 계획을 서둘러 실행에 옮길 필요가 없었다. 더욱이 원폭 투하나 침략을 하지 않더라도 심각한 보급 부족으로 일본이 항복할 가능성이 높았다.

 

미국이 전후 세계의 모습을 발표하기 위해서는 소련이 일본을 포함한 아시아에 대한 지배권을 확장하는 것을 위협하고 막아야 했다는 것이 가장 큰 이유다. 전쟁이 끝날 무렵에는 소련이 소멸한 독일이 남긴 권력의 공백을 메울 것이 분명했다.

 

따라서 위협, 특히 핵무기의 치명적인 표시가 소련의 확장을 제한하기 위한 중요하고 효과적인 전략인 소위 "핵 억제/원자 외교"가 되었다. 이것은 냉전이 시작된 이래로 미국 안보 정책의 중심 요소였다.
