Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments shed light on whether the strength in the labor market may have influenced his views on the path for central bank rate hikes.

Fed officials voted to delay raising rates for the second time at their Wednesday meeting. They approved raising the benchmark federal funds rate by a quarter percentage point between 4.5% and 4.75%. They presented it by a half point in December and 0.75 points in November.

The central bank is looking to slow economic growth to curb inflation, which has recently eased. Fed officials have raised interest rates by 4.5 percentage points over the past 12 months, the fastest pace since the 1980s, and they expect the unemployment rate to rise to about 4.6% by the end of the year. But the Labor Department said employers added 517,000 jobs in January, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.4%, the lowest level since 1969.

When asked at a news conference last week about any pause in rate increases, Mr. Powell said, "I don't feel a lot of certainty about where that will be. It could certainly be higher" than the December projection. "If we come to the view that we need to move rates up beyond what we said in December, we could certainly do that," he said. In recent weeks, investors have expected the Fed to cut rates this year due to a sharp drop in inflation. "I'm not going to try to persuade people to have a different forecast, but we forecast that it will take some time and some patience and that we'll need to keep rates higher for longer," he said.

그는 "사람들이 다른 예측을 하도록 설득하지는 않겠지만 시간과 인내심이 필요하고 금리를 더 오랫동안 더 높게 유지해야 할 것"이라고 강조했다.
