Medical coding is primarily used to translate healthcare diagnoses and procedures into codes to handle the patients’ claims. Instead of transferring a billion amounts of single information, medical coding allows this information to be transferred efficiently and compactly. With this technique, various hospitals and healthcare facilities tend to use this as the insurance companies/ agencies require verification of patient claims. There are 3 types of code sets medical coders are required to know which are: CPT (Current Procedure Terminology), ICD (International Classification of Disease), and HCPCS (Health Care Procedure Coding System).

 

Over the past few years, medical coding has developed immensely in the medical platform creating an improved and modern technology for patient monitoring and telemedicine. In the past, doctors and hospitals would use manuals and paper to record information whereas now, things have improved as AI and computer coding have developed. 

 

Although medicine coding is still difficult and perplexing today, there are still improvements and development to be done in the future. With this complex machinery and technology, the usage and demands for medical coders have increased extremely. Most of the time, doctors are one of the few professions that receive credit for being a hero or saving a patient. However, underrated professionals such as medical coders also hold so much responsibility and potential toward the patients.
