The History of Cheong Wa Dae

After Vogue Korea released a collection of fashion photoshoots at Cheong Wa Dae, widespread criticism rose among the public. Cheong Wa Dae, also known as the Blue House, served as a presidential compound and residence for the past 74 years since the South Korean government was established. Two politicians from opposite political parties: Tak Hyun-min, who was the past protocol secretary of President Moon, and Park Min-Shik, a South Korean politician who currently serves President Yoon as the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, share contradicting points regarding this issue.

Shortly after its release, the photoshoots became controversial on all media platforms. The spread of this issue also instigated debates among two Korean politicians: Tak Hyun-min and Park Min-Shik.

Tak responded to this issue by claiming that the collection “undermines political authority.” Tak mentioned how Japan transformed Changgyeong Palace into Changgyeongwon, a zoo originally used in the opening ceremony during the colonial occupation of Korea. Tak thus believes that the event has “undermined” the authority of the Korean Empire and shows veneration towards the Japanese imperial regime. However, Minister Park denounced Secretary Pak’s remarks as ignoring the people. Park claimed that "The history of Cheong Wa Dae ¡ª whether proud or shameful ¡ª will be better preserved and widely remembered as a space for the people.”

Controversy regarding this issue continues to arise after odd expressions were made by the citizens that Cheong Wa Dae “would be returned to the people under the guise of full openness”.
