Should AI Generated Paintings Considered as Art?

In 2019, the world witnessed a historic moment when Ai-Da, a humanoid robot, was born and recognized as the world's first robot artist. Named after Ada Lovelace, a British mathematician and computer program developer, Aida has a human-like appearance with ergonomic hands, and her eyes are camera-shaped. Her ability to draw what she saw through the camera while sketching with a pencil has attracted attention to her ability different from artificial intelligence, which creates suitable images based on the learned data.

Artificial intelligence uses a learning technology called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Unlike deep learning, GAN has the advantage of being able to learn by itself without human intervention or data to learn. While AI art has received praise for its originality and creativity, it also faces several problems and criticisms that need to be addressed. However, it is difficult to agree with the idea that AI art can only be recognized by human artists' standards.

AI art sometimes makes progress beyond humans in originality and creativity, but it does not replace curiosity, the unique domain of human artists. Curiosity is the nature of a human being who is imperfect but constantly takes on new challenges. AI art will evolve into a form of helping and collaborating with human artists. In that respect, AI art is a new medium, a fresh stimulus to help artists with creative ideas and reduce simple labor. If an AI artist learns a specific keyword and draws an abstract sketch, a human artist can proceed by completing the work based on it. On the other hand, critics argue that AI art is simply a product of data that is fed into the machine and that there is no true originality in AI works. They claim that AI art only learns data chosen by a human and cannot be seen as AI's creativity.

Regardless of one's opinion on the matter, AI art will continue to shape the art world. As AI and human artists coexist and collaborate, we can expect to see even more innovative and diverse works of art that push the boundaries of what we thought was possible.
